What is THE Best Blogging Platform (And How To Choose It?)

In this post, I’ll be looking at best blogging sites and blogging platforms – and in the process, try and help you choose the best one, as well as show you what features should you look for.

Blogging is a great way to create a custom online presence – no matter whether you’re writing to establish a creative portfolio, promoting your business, or doing it strictly for fun.

No matter your goals and your intentions – there are plenty of options for you to choose from. So many, it’s super easy to get lost! And certainly, they all claim to be the best blogging platform out there, making the choice all the more difficult.

Well, this is what this guide is for. In here, I compiled all types of blogging platforms – going all the way from website builders, suited for beginners, moving towards more blog-specific platforms, suited for reaching wider audiences or a subscription-based monetization.

The Best Blogging Platform – List

For those looking for the best place to start a blog, the choice is pretty vast, and there are a lot of options. But these right here are the best blogging platform options out there:

Wix is an easy-to-use and open-ended website builder that stands out because it gives you direct control over the look and feel of your blog. I consider Wix the best platform to use if you’re focused not only on the originality of your texts – but on your website design as well.

best blogging platform wix homepage

Wix isn’t just a blogging platform. You can actually use this service to create all manner of websites, from corporate profiles to artistic portfolios. This is a great characteristic because it means you can integrate your blog into a broader business, personal or eCommerce site.

And even though this website builder is all about customizability, it’s also mighty easy to use, too. You’ll have no problem designing the blog of your dreams with Wix. It’s super straightforward. All you need to do is to visit the Wix App Market and add the free Wix Blog app to your site.

Simple blog editing experience

It’s honestly hard to find any way in which Wix could make itself easier to use. To design blog posts, you’ll use a drag-and-drop website page editor that allows you to see exactly what your final piece will look like once it’s published.

best blogging platform wix editor

And although it’s easy for beginners to use, the Wix editor is impressively flexible in terms of design. That’s because, unlike most blog website builders, there are no restrictions about where or how you display your text and image content.

What’s the advantage of that? Well, in the Wix editor, you can do whatever you like from displaying images full-screen to turning your text upside-down.

As a new blogger, you can take advantage of this flexibility to create a memorable blog aesthetic that will stick in the minds of your readers and encourage them to subscribe.

Amazing template selection

Now – if you’re going to be using this Wix editor, you’ll still need to choose a starting point. To be more exact – a template. Luckily for any blogger, there a massive array of options to choose from. There are more than 500 unique templates you can choose from with this blogging platform.

best blogging platform wix themes

And it’s not hard to find one suited to your particular blog audience as templates are helpfully categorized by industry. You can quickly narrow down the selection with options like ‘Fashion’ and ‘Photography’ blogs.

At the somewhat unlikely case of not finding the right template for you in Wix’ premade selection, you can actually just create your own from scratch.

As long as you have a bit of free time to spend messing around with color palettes and fonts, this is a great way to truly make your new Wix blog your own.

The one downside of Wix is that it’s not particularly easy to migrate your blog from one template to another. Unlike most of the other best blogging platform options on this list, Wix won’t automatically migrate your content between themes, so you’ll have to recreate your posts manually if you decide you to swap later on.

AI comes to help!

So far, I only talked about Wix as an option to build a blog from scratch, using its brilliant editor. But what if you’re the polar opposite of a “visual creative” person? What if for you, the idea of spending hours arranging the website pixel-by-pixel sounds like torment?

Wix has an alternative. It’s called Wix Artificial Design Intelligence – but friends call it ADI.

And it’s a solid tool that can be used to build a blog in a hurry. By simply answering a few questions, and selecting what elements you want or your page, you’ll simply end up with a website that includes everything you need.

best blogging platform wix ai editor

Using Wix ADI will dramatically reduce the amount of time you spend setting up your blog pages.

Diverse app store

Some bloggers just want a platform to share their intimate thoughts and feelings with the closest people in their lives, but others want to broadcast their message to as wide an audience as possible.

If you’re in that second group (hey, so am I!), you’ll find plenty of useful tools to help you grow your audience in the Wix App Market.

For example, you use the Social Media Stream app to embed content from Twitter or Facebook on your Wix blog.

Doing this will make it easier to keep your blog content up to date, and improve engagement with readers.

best blogging platform wix apps

Also, you can use the Web-Stat analytics app to evaluate your blog audience demographics and evaluate which posts are generating the best response with your readership.

Having a clear picture of what kind of content connects best with your audience will let you tailor future posts for the best possible response.

Cool! How expensive is Wix blogging?

When it comes to price, bloggers on a budget will be happy to find out that it’s actually possible to create a completely free blog through Wix.

However, with a free Wix site, you lose the ability to connect your blog to a normal website domain. Also, Wix will display ads on your blog that you can’t get rid of.

Now, that’s not ideal.

Most casual bloggers will be best off with the $13/month Wix Combo plan which comes with 3GB of bandwidth and allows you to upload 2GB worth of data to your blog. The Combo plan probably won’t be suitable if you plan to post a lot of multimedia content or think your blog could attract a large following. If you do, consider opting for the $17/month Unlimited package instead, which removes all of these limitations.

Overall, Wix offers an intuitive page editor, diverse app store, and helpful SEO tools – making it a great place to start a blog. And if you’re not feeling like building a website at all – Wix ADI will prove to be a brilliant solution as well.

Pros

  • User-friendly drag-and-drop design system
  • Huge number of templates and apps to choose from
  • Position blog content wherever you like
  • Grow your readership through social media and analytics

Cons

  • Compulsory Wix branding with free blogs
  • No easy way to transfer your content across different themes

WordPress was created with blogging at its very core. With a brilliant text editor and plenty of plugins to help you write and edit your blog, it’s a platform suited perfectly for writers.

And the WordPress.com platform simply takes everything good from WordPress and puts in into a neat website-builder package.

best blogging platform wordpress homepage

But still, I would not call it a website builder. WordPress.com is a dedicated blogging platform instead of a regular website builder that just happens to offer excellent blog support.

This narrow, laser-like focus will be appreciated by any user who wants every feature of their blogging platform to be specifically intended to help you put together an awesome blog.

But even though it’s a blogging platform first – it does not mean that’s all it does.

You also have access to a massive plugin library. With nearly 60,000 options available, you can make your WordPress website do pretty much anything.

best blogging platform wordpress plugins

What are the best options for bloggers?

One example of that is WordPress.com’s integration of social networks. If you choose to, WordPress.com share your posts on multiple social networking accounts simultaneously, as soon as they’re published. And then there are SEO layouts and plugins, allowing you to optimize the content so it’s better ranking on search engines – giving you an edge when competing for the users.

A comfortable place to write

Bloggers will absolutely know, that the editor you use is massively important. It’s got to be versatile, convenient to use, and offer an overall smooth writing experience.

Well, guess what – that’s what the WordPress editor is. It’s absolutely on par with all the best content editors out there. Therefore, you can happily write your content on this editor, saving a lot of time, since now you don’t have to migrate your posts between editors.

best blogging platform wordpress blog

Sure, there might be a bit of a learning curve. Instead of immediately seeing what your blog post will look like, you’ll have to keep switching back and forth between the ‘Editing’ and ‘Preview’ modes to do that.

But once you have the hang of using a WordPress.com, you’ll realize why this is a good way to do things for bloggers. It means that you write in a clean Microsoft Word style environment and don’t have to mess around with page layout for every new post. Having a distraction-free place to write will make it easier for you to create better content.

Trust me, I’d know it. After all – I’m currently writing this post on a WordPress editor.

Now, how much does it cost? Well, it’s actually possible to create a free WordPress.com blog, but free blogs do come with non-removable WordPress.com branding and no ability to connect a custom domain. If you want to remove the pesky WordPress logo that comes with free blogs, you can upgrade to the starter $4/month Premium WordPress plan. It also comes with a free domain!

It you wish to gain access to the WordPress plugin library, you’ll need to purchase the Business plan for $25 a month.

WordPress.org is a good option for advanced blogging

Up until now, I only covered WordPress.com – a content management system turned website builder, that combines website builder simplicity with a powerful blogging interface.

But there’s also an alternative WordPress option. Called WordPress.org, it often gets confused with the .com counterpart. But there are some differences.

WordPress.org is the open-source variant of the software that powers WordPress.com. It’s free, compatible with any major server hosting service and you can install literally thousands of different free plug-ins to customize your pages.

However, WordPress.org’s open-source nature also works against it as not all WordPress.org plug-ins and themes work as they’re supposed to, especially those created by amateur developers. Also, you need to have a premium hosting account and just a little bit of technical knowledge in order to build and manage your WordPress.org .As such, it’s best to steer clear of WordPress.org if you are creating your first blog and don’t have any coding experience. But if you’re interested in the benefits and not afraid of challenges…Why not?

The way your blog looks is incredibly important. While your readers will stay for what you write, a beautiful blog is a great way to reel them in so they actually start reading!

This is where Squarespace absolutely shines. With nearly a dozen blogging templates, it offers a solid library to choose from. The choices are pretty diverse, too – meaning that you will get a solid starting point to make the site your own.

best blogging platform squarespace templates

Now, let’s get to the main event – blogging. How is it in Squarespace?

In one word – delightful. Surprisingly, Squarespace is one of the best blog sites out there. You’re given a solid amount of editing tools for blog posts, the same you get when editing a website.

This means you can edit the content to include images, sign-up forms, galleries, and buttons.

For both small operations and big plans

Squarespace is perfectly suited for a one-person operation. Due to its marketing, design, and blogging tools being simple to master, you should have no issues setting everything up, even with no prior experience.

Not to say you have to do this though.

Square allows you to add contributors to your blog, as well as set individual permissions to each user, allowing you to run a major operation – through a basic website builder.

And it works just like it would one any major blogging CMS – with specific author pages and all.

Making complicated things simple

We all know the most important part of writing a blog. Obviously – it’s the content itself. And everything else is secondary.

Until it’s not.

Hopefully, at some point of your blogging career (if it hasn’t happened already), you’ll strike gold and have plenty of visitors of your site. Then, it might become one of your primary sources of income, meaning you’d have to deal with eCommerce, analytics, SEO, and other things, rather than simply put words on a screen.

Well, while testing Squarespace, I noticed a trend that might actually prove beneficial to writers, rather reluctant to become business owners.

Everything, and I mean everything in Squarespace is displayed in a simple and clear manner. But my favorite example certainly has to be analytics. Instead of having to juggle around API keys, and learn a complicated dashboard, all you’ll have is an app.

It’s app-tly called Squarespace Analytics. And it displays all the information in a very convenient way. Users love it, too, with a 4.9/5 rating on the Apple Store.

best blogging platform squarespace analytics

Overall, Squarespace does a brilliant job of giving bloggers all the tools they need to succeed – be it a better way of writing their content, or helping to power up business with other tools. It’s all out there.

SITE123 is a simple website builder with an intuitive blog design interface that makes starting a blogging site quick and easy. In fact, it’s by far the easiest blogging website builder to setup on this list.

best blogging platform site123 homepage

On top of the simplicity, SITE123 website editor is also mobile-friendly. If you’re a travel blogger, this means you won’t have to lug a laptop around in order to share your posts. The mobile editor gives you access to almost all the same options as the desktop browser version, so writing posts or customizing your blog on the move won’t be a problem.

Amazingly easy to set up

SITE123’s main selling point for bloggers is undoubtedly its ease of use. Like Wix, this blogging platform uses a smart questionnaire to make the process of setting up your first blog effortless.

The first step to starting a SITE123 blog is to tell the virtual design assistant what kind of topic you’ll be writing about. As soon as you’ve added a few key pieces of information, a bespoke blog design will be generated for you.

best blogging platform site123 blogging

If the proposed design is exactly what you’re looking for, you’ll just need to make a few final tweaks to it via the SITE123 page editor. After you have, you’ll be completely ready to begin posting.

To keep things simple, Site123 doesn’t use a drag-and-drop system like other blogging platforms on this list. Instead, you simply add content into text or image fields that have already been added for you.

Suitable design options for any type of blog

Yes – SITE123 will generate a blog for you. But you still will have a solid amount of options to choose from.

Bloggers will get to choose from 30 different templates, as well as have an option of several different color scheme and font combinations.

best blogging platform site123 themes

Similar is true when displaying your blog. While you will get a preset template for your blogs, you can still choose between 8 different options.

best blogging platform site123 blog options

However, the blog editor itself could be a little more up to date. It’s a bit basic and can’t really compare to some of. thetop blogging platforms out there.

best blogging platform blog editor

Luckily, the same cannot be said about the available applications and integrations. When you’re finished with the initial design of your blog, you can take it to the next level by installing one of the numerous plug-ins available in the SITE123 app store.

best blogging platform site123 plugins

To make it easy for your readers to share your blog with their friends, you should definitely consider integrating a social media platform into your blog. One of the ways to do this is with the AddThis app. AddThis will display little ‘share’ buttons on all of your posts for every popular social media platform.

How much is all this? There is a free plan you can use for your blogs – however, it will turn your website’s URL into an impossible-to-remember combination of numbers and letters.

And that’s not good for the brand.

Instead, you should try out the SITE123 premium plan. It costs $12.80/month, and which comes with a 10GB storage limit as well as a free website domain.

SITE123 is a great blogging platform or anyone who wants to write on the move or design a blog quickly. The blog editor won’t blow anyone’s mind – but if you’re someone looking to build a quick blog, this is one of the top options.

Pros

  • Setting up is a breeze
  • Easy to edit

Cons

  • Premium package could be cheaper
  • Blogging interface is outdated

If “blogging” and “business” are inseparable for you, then GoDaddy may just be the best blogging platform for you. It combines blogs, adding a twist of professional tools, making it a great way for businesses to spread their message – and get some new clients in the process.

best blogging platform godaddy homepage

For some, GoDaddy is known as the world’s most successful internet domain registrar. Others see it as a solid hosting provider. But bloggers will be most interested in its all-inclusive website builder.

Like several other modern website builders, GoDaddy uses a questionnaire to build you a great starter site you can then edit to your heart’s content.

How does that work? Well, when you first open a GoDaddy blog website, you’ll need to provide some details about your blog and its target audience. GoDaddy will then use your info to generate a theme and domain name for you.

best blogging platform godaddy editing website

Don’t feel like getting your blog generated by the computer? You’ll still have an option to swap and instead take one that’s available in the library. Generally, these have stylish or formal fonts depending on the target blog audience as well as colorful, engaging photos.

best blogging platform godaddy templates

Make money with your GoDaddy blog

The GoDaddy website builder isn’t just designed for blogging for fun. It can also be used to create a fully-fledged online store that works with popular payment providers like Square and Paypal.

That means you can actually make money with your GoDaddy blog posts if you use them to promote the products and services you sell through your site.

And GoDaddy will help you to generate an income with your blog in other ways too, such as running ads or monetizing posts with affiliate links. Helpfully, there’s even a published guide about the various ways you can use your GoDaddy blog to generate a second income.

If you do decide to monetize your blog (and even if you don’t) you’ll want to maximize the number of visits your site receives. Fortunately, the GoDaddy website builder will help you to do that with in-built SEO tools. Using these, you can ensure that your posts are properly worded for success on search result pages, and you can monitor your audience’s response to specific blog posts.

Subscriptions to this blogging platform also come with marketing tools that will allow you to engage your readers through email and social media messages. For example, the marketing checklist will help you do all the required tasks to maximize your reader reach.

Good for both advanced users and newbie blog writers

Just starting out in the whole “blogging website business”? There are several elements of the GoDaddy website builder that will make it perhaps the best place to start a blog if you’ve never had to manage a website before.

It’s easy to build a website and to maintain a blog in it. The single-column layout simplifies everything to the highest degree. There are also plenty of guides and tutorials available – so even the complete beginners can feel right at home after just a few hours.

godaddy blogging

Adding and editing blogs is also going to be pretty simple – the text editor, while completely minimalist is modern, and comes with all expected basic formatting and editing tools (as well as some basic SEO capabilities).

best blogging platform godaddy blog editor

But the GoDaddy website builder isn’t a simplistic platform by any measure. In fact, it comes with several features that more advanced bloggers will appreciate. You can easily add subscriptions, upload PDFs, even include comments/social feed or a calendar. Ther’s also a way to include custom HTML.

Seriously – just add flash games instead of a blog post if you’re not feeling like writing.

Sadly, the new, updated version of the editor does not allow editing your own CSS code (something that was available back in the day). So if you’re interested in coding your blog to perfection – look elsewhere.

Limitations don’t end there. Unfortunately, GoDaddy doesn’t offer a free blogging subscription, but you can still test out the platform without paying.

So, if you think this could be the right place to start your new blog, try playing around with the software for a while before upgrading to a paid subscription.

The bottom-tier GoDaddy blog package is the $10/month Basic plan. With this, you’ll get you a free domain name but no SEO or marketing tools. In order to access those, you’ll need to upgrade to the more expensive $15/month Standard subscription.

Overall, with the GoDaddy website builder, you get a comprehensive package that works great for business-oriented blogs. It offers a fair amount of business features, wrapped up in a simple-to-use package. While it won’t be enough for advanced website editors, a beginner business blogger will certainly appreciate what is has.

Pros

  • Excellent business blog promo tools
  • Quick to set everything up
  • Simple editing experience

Cons

  • Less design freedom than other best blog sites
  • No free plan

If you want an easy way to share your blogs for free and reach an audience, there’s probably no better blogging platform then Medium.

The big advantage of using Medium is that you have the ability to reach a potentially huge number of people that have a mutual interest in your ideas and stories.

best blogging platform medium homepage

How’s that? Well, most of the best blogging platforms on this list are website builders with features suited to helping you create a great standalone blog. But Medium is different.

Instead of a website builder, Medium is actually an aggregated content site for bloggers where casual writers and professional journalists can share their work.  Medium also has some social networking features: you can message other bloggers directly or post responses to their pieces – giving an opportunity for you to make some connections in the process. In terms of community presence, Medium is one of the best blog sites in the world, period.

best blogging platform medium melinda gates

When you share a blog using Medium, it gets published for the world to see at Medium.com, a site that gets over 60 million page views per month. Your blogs will be displayed alongside the work of other writers and will show up on the page of whichever relevant Medium ‘Topics’ you select, such as Tech, Art, Beauty, or Books.

best blogging platform medium topic

The big advantage of Medium is that, if your content is popular, you could reach a potentially huge audience with your Medium blogs. Readers who see your blog are able to show their appreciation with ‘Claps’, which are similar to Facebook Likes, except that a single reader can give many Claps.

If your blog post gets a good response, it might get promoted to the Medium homepage or the main page of a popular topic, where it could be seen by thousands of readers. Of course, for that to happen you’ll need to share well-written blogs that are designed for a very general audience, not just your friends and family.

And of course, there’s no such thing as a “guarantee”. Your popularity is very much decided by a system you have very low control of.

Speaking of low control, you won’t get the opportunity to make a unique website with Medium. Instead, you’ll get an address you can share to show friends, family members or clients your published blogs.

Medium gives all writers a ‘profile’ where all of their published articles are displayed. These come in the form of medium.com/@yourprofilename

Incredibly simple interface

But there’s more to Medium than its potential for reaching a big audience. This platform also stands out for how easy it makes writing and sharing blog posts.

While other sites speed up the process of creating a blog website, with Medium there’s no website to create. That means you can literally open a Medium account and begin drafting your first blog in seconds

And anyone who’s used Microsoft Word, WordPress, or even a plain old text editor, will feel instantly at home in Medium’s minimalist writing interface. You can add photos to your Medium blogs, but there are very few customization options.

best blogging platform medium blog

For some, this may actually be a good thing, as it means you can concentrate on the content of your post instead of its form.

You can still monetize your blogs

When you use Medium, you won’t be publishing on your own website – which means you can’t run ads or start an eCommerce section of your blog to generate a second income. Fortunately, there are ways to make money from your Medium blogs

The first option to do this, and probably the best for most Medium bloggers, is to use the Medium Partner Program. Joining is incredibly simple, all you have to do is select the ‘make your story eligible to earn money’ button on your blog post.

Medium readers get to see a limited number of free article views every month, and have to pay to access additional content.

If you select the ‘earn money’ option and your blog post is extremely popular, Medium will pass a small percentage of those subscriptions on to you. Once again, making a steady income this way is only possible if you publish top-quality blog content on Medium.

Luckily, there’s no initial investment require to do any of this.

The great thing about Medium is that it’s completely free to use. If you’re a blog writer you can publish as many posts as you like with no charge and will never have to worry about upgrading to a premium plan.

Pros

  • Connect with a massive audience
  • Communicate with and get inspired by other bloggers
  • Easy to set up
  • Let’s you focus on writing instead of running a site

Cons

  • Can’t create or manage your own brand
  • No way to run ads on your blogs

Blogger is a simple and free blogging site that is all about perfecting the basics of a blog. If you aren’t too bothered about advanced design features or complicated eCommerce integration, then it’s probably the best place for you to start a blog.

best blogging platform blogger homepage

Blogger has been around for a while. Founded in 1999, this blogging platform actually helped to define what a blog is. After being purchased by Google in 2003, Blogger now integrates seamlessly with other Google services. In fact, a Google account is the only thing you need to start using Blogger.

The similarities don’t stop there.

Any Google user will feel at home navigating managing their blog content from the Blogger interface. Menus and options look very similar to how they do in Gmail, so figuring out how to edit a blog post or change your site’s theme will take no time at all.

best blogging platform blogger dashboard
If you use Gmail, of course.

Unfortunately, Blogger’s age is showing in some areas. It’s clear that Google hasn’t invested enough money into the development of the platform for it to keep up with the features offered by modern blogging sites like Wix.

For example, although the Blogger site management interface is easy to navigate, you don’t have that much control over most details of your site.

Also, Blogger themes aren’t exactly ugly, but they certainly aren’t as beautiful, complex, or up to date as many other blogging platforms out there.

But there are some great news if you are on a tight budget. Blogger isn’t like any of the other best blogging sites when it comes to free services.

If you create a free blog with most of Blogger’s competitors, you’ll have to deal with frustrating ads plastered over your blog content and you’ll be limited to an unattractive subdomain.

That’s not how things are with Blogger.

You do get a subdomain with a Blogger account, in the form of www.yournamehere.blogspot.com, but you can also connect a custom domain for free. Oh, and there are no compulsory ads.

In other words, if you’re looking for a free place to start a blog, Blogger is the least limited option.

Great Google services integration

Another big reason to think about starting a blog with Blogger is that you get some of the most thorough visitor analysis software of any blogging platform thanks to Google Analytics.

It’s very easy to find out information such as which websites are linking most to you and which keywords readers are using to find your blog.

Some platforms try really hard to offer either Google Analytics integration or at least some kind of a similar product that matches it. Here – you get the real thing.

After you’ve been running your Blogger blog for a few weeks, you can have a look at this data and use it to adjust your blog content to appeal to a wider audience. This will allow you to reach more readers and take your blogging game to the next level.

You can also use Google services to monetize your blog by running Google Adsense adverts alongside your posts. If you activate this feature, Google will evaluate your content and find relevant ads to post on your site. Then, as long as enough visitors click on those ads while reading your posts, you’ll begin to earn a small income from your Blogger site.

In short, if you are on a tight budget, Blogger is the best place for you to start a blog. It comes with more features than most competing free blogging platforms including useful monetization tools.

Pros

  • Completely free to use
  • Great visitor analytics information and monetization
  • Simple writing interface
  • Just need a Google account to get started

Cons

  • Themes could be improved
  • Site management interface is dated

Ghost is a blogging platform that’s well-liked for its a slick, minimalist writing interface and terrific advanced tools.

Are you an experienced blog writer who’s sick and tired of clunky blogging platforms? Then Ghost is probably the best option for you.

best blogging platform ghost homepage

Ghost is very different from the other platforms I talked about here. It is both a fully-hosted blogging site and a standalone piece of software that you can run through a third-party web host.

The reason that Ghost deserves a place in this list is the balance it manages to strike between power and simplicity. To put it briefly, Ghost gives you extremely advanced customization options while making everyday blogging tasks, like managing published posts, super straightforward.

This has made the Ghost blogging platform extremely popular with first-time bloggers and advanced users alike. Talk about synergy.

When it comes to writing posts, Ghost offers a completely unique blogging experience. The Ghost writing editor is extremely clean, allowing you to concentrate on your blog content. And, in place of an obtrusive text formatting menu, Ghost uses a language called ‘Markdown’ to determine font size and bolding.

It might take you a while to get the hang of Markdown as you’ll have to remember a series of new keyboard shortcuts and special characters. However, once you’ve got your head around how it works, you’ll find that Markdown helps you write posts way faster than you could in other blogging platforms.

Ghost blogs look absolutely fantastic, largely thanks to the advanced themes that users get access to. A wide variety is on offer, and each theme comes with a unique layout and style.

In the Ghost Theme Marketplace, you’ll find options for photography blogs, personal journals, and news sites. In short, no matter what style of blog you want to create, there should be an appropriate option.

The one issue with Ghost blog themes is that you have to pay for most of them. While free themes are available, they’re generally not as advanced as their premium competitors. Paid Ghost themes tend to cost between $19 and $59.

Monetize your blog with a Ghost paywall

With Ghost, you own your blogging site. That means that all the traditional methods of making money with your blog are open to you. For example, you can display ads, promote products, or share affiliate links.

On top of that, the Ghost blogging platform stands out because it allows you to generate an income in a way that isn’t possible on most blogging platforms. You see, Ghost allows you to set up a paywall so that visitors have to purchase a monthly subscription to access all of your blog’s content. And all of that is allowed with no third-party apps and downloads – straight out of the box.

Using a paywall tends to work best if you’re blogging about a niche topic and have already made a name for yourself as a writer.

If you’re able to grow a large and dedicated audience of readers willing to pay to see your content – using Ghost is perhaps the easiest way to do it.

Great tools for advanced bloggers

The Ghost platform can operate like a fully-hosted website builder, as do most of the other best blogging platforms that we’ve looked at today. But one feature that advanced bloggers are sure to love is that Ghost can also function as a standalone Content Management System (CMS).

best blogging platform ghost features

What does that mean? Well, if you choose to use Ghost as a CMS, you’ll be able to run your Ghost blog from any third-party server.

The advantage of doing that is you can keep control over your site’s data and security. You can also choose exactly how much monthly storage and bandwidth you require, allowing you to save blogging costs because you won’t pay for more than you need.

If you’re comfortable with a bit of coding, you can even run the Ghost CMS package as a Node.js API. In plain old English, that means the Ghost platform can be set up so that you can launch your blog by typing a few commands on your laptop or desktop computer.

Obviously, this isn’t a feature that will be useful unless you’re a bit of a technical whizz.

With annual billing, fully-hosted Ghost blogs cost $29/month and up. The basic package allows you to add 1,000 paying members to your site, but you’ll need to upgrade for more than that. The mid-tier option is the $79/month Standard plan which adds priority support, support for five staff blog writers and the ability to have 3,000 paid-up blog members.

But don’t be put off by that high prices, Ghost isn’t just for bloggers with a large budget.

If you use Ghost as a self-hosted CMS, you’ll find that it’s free to download the Ghost software package. All you need to pay for is a third-party web server host and domain registration. With some hosting services, your costs could be as low as $0.99/month.

Overall, the powerful tools included in the Ghost platform make it an excellent option for tech-savvy bloggers. Ghost might be a comparatively expensive service in its fully-hosted form, but you can save cash by using the self-hosted version instead.

Pros

  • Interface provides a distraction-free writing environment
  • Advanced editor speeds up your writing speed
  • Easy to monetize your blog with a paywall
  • Top-notch themes

Cons

  • Fully-hosted subscription and themes are pricey
  • Not a lot of integration with apps

What to Look For In the Best Blogging Platform? What to Look For In the Best Blogging Platform?

Let’s take a breather here real quick.

I’ve covered some of the best blogging sites and platforms out here – but there are a lot of things to consider, so you shouldn’t feel bad if you still haven’t made up your mind.

In this part, let’s talk more about what things should you consider when choosing a blogging platform.

Easy to start and manage

Are you a new blogger? Then you should absolutely prioritize ease-of-use. A platform like Ghost may interest everyone (even total beginners!) with its incredible features, but it can turn into a serious rabbit hole. And before you know it, you’ll have to spend more hours fixing the mess that is your website than…actually writing.

With platforms such as Squarespace or Wix, you could literally have a brand new blog website designed and ready to go in less than half an hour, leaving you plenty of time to write a couple of high-quality posts to launch with.

One of the best blog site examples I can think of is Laura Baross’s blog. This one-person environmentalist journal has a clean design and eye-catching photos that invite the reader to delve deeper into its pages.

It’s all been created using Wix – but looking at the clean design of the website, many could definitely be fooled into thinking it’s been blessed by a professional website designer:

Comfortable writing interface

A blogging platform can be not only a place for you to post content in. It also can – and in my opinion, should – offer a comfortable writing experience. If you’re about to spend hundreds of hours of your life working inside the interface – make it a good one.

Just like you, I’m a writer (you’re reading the words I wrote, so this is surprising literally nobody). So take my word for it – a good writing interface can lift up your mood and productivity as much as a bad one can do the opposite.

On this lazy Friday afternoon, I’m using the WordPress editor. It’s pretty lightweight and fast. It’s the new Gutenberg version that enraged a lot of writers when it first showed up (people hate change, go figure) but now, it’s seriously, seriously good.

And of course, WordPress isn’t just a pretty editor. It’s a full-on platform you can use not only to share your thoughts and ideas but also to build a serious blogging empire.

Need some inspiration? Check out the Bloginity website, which was built entirely with WordPress.

But of course, WordPress is not the only horse in the race. Similarly, beautiful and functional editors are available on Blogger, Medium, and even Squarespace.

Unique but simple templates

Words are important – but good looks are importanter.

If you want to use your blog to develop a reputation, whether it’s for your personal work or for your business, differentiating yourself through blog design is always a good idea.

Several of the blogging platform I mentioned on this list offer beautiful theme options – but no other (and I mean it) can match Squarespace.

Danish fashion and photography blog The Locals absolutely takes my love and support here. It’s beautiful – seriously, seriously beautiful.

So – while I have no doubt in the power of your words, I suggest you don’t forget the power of the good ol’ aesthetic.

Flexibility to grow

Are you starting a blog for a new business? Then you might want to start out with a fairly simple site to share your backstory.

However, as time goes on, you might wish to add extra functions to your blog or explore ways you can monetize your content. You can ensure your blog has room to grow with Wix, Medium, or WordPress.

The best thing about choosing one of these blogging platforms is that you don’t have to design a hugely complicated blog for yourself right away. Each of these three platforms makes it easy to add plug-ins or monetization options to your content whenever you’re ready to.

It’s not hard to find examples of online blogs whose popularity has grown massively over time. One of these is Apartment Therapy, whose creators certainly chose a blogging platform that gave them room to expand.

best blogging platform apartment therapy

Apartment Therapy is visited by thousands of visitors a month who are looking for inspiring designs and decor tips. It started back in 2001 as a weekly newsletter and became a blog in 2004. The site had comparatively few visitors back then but Maxwell Ryan, the designer behind the blog, evidently picked the right blogging platform to grow his site with.

Now it includes a marketplace, allowing people to buy and sell their products. A solid leap from a weekly newsletter.
