Wix is one of the world’s most popular website building platforms – mostly due to the fact it offers a little something for absolutely everyone. And bloggers rejoice – because it’s not only a terrific website builder but perhaps the best free blogging platform as well.

wix homepage

Overall, I find this builder to be pretty ideal if you’re a total beginner who wants not only a blog to share some thoughts – but a full website, complete with your custom design.

free blogging platform wix features

But first, if you’re a beginner blogger, I’d recommend taking advantage of Wix’s free “how to start a blog” guide.

It will walk you through every step of the process, ensuring that you end up with a top-quality website which is both attractive and functional. If you follow the steps it outlines, you will learn:

  1. Why you should start a blog (but you may know that already).
  2. How to plan high-quality content that’s both relevant and engaging.
  3. The best way to set up your blog using Wix’s free editor.
  4. What you should be doing to promote your content and gain more readers.

If you’re making your first blog, you will almost certainly discover some great tips and tricks here.

free blogging platform wix list

And once you get your blog going, you’ll be given an opportunity to use Wix’s impeccable design features.

Most of the design features are completely free, allowing you to make an entirely custom website, fitting your personal style, without having to pay a cent. With the templates and visual effects available, you’re going to have a blast making your blog.

Overall, Wix is not only a free blogging platform – it’s a beginner-friendly way to set up your online presence.

Starting Your Free Wix Blog

When it comes to actually starting your blog, Wix gives you the choice of two different editing interfaces. The Wix Editor comes with the pixel-perfect design flexibility that the platform is known for, while Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) is more beginner-friendly and suited to those who want to get online faster.

free blogging platform wix choose method

They’re both free – and useful.

Which one should you choose? Let’s have a look at both. First up – the ADI.

Now, it’s important to realise that Wix ADI does a lot of the blog creation work for you. You will have to answer a number of questions about the type of website you want and the design features that appeal to you. Then you will be given a custom template that you can edit and populate with your own content.

free blogging platform wix adi questions

Personally, I love building new blogs with Wix ADI. It asks you about the fonts and color schemes you want to use, special features that should be included, and the sort of style you’re looking for. You can add whatever extra design features you want, including video content, live chat tools, and social media feeds.

free blogging platform wix design features

And voila – your blog is now live. Just like that. You can now start editing and writing.

free blogging platform wix editor

Once you get to the Wix ADI editor, you will immediately notice that it’s quite tidy and well designed. Although it doesn’t provide all that much flexibility, you will be able to add, remove, and reorder elements as needed.

It also allows you to change global design features such as your color scheme or font pairings.

All things considered, Wix ADI is a great option if you want to get online quickly. Since you will be working with a custom template that should be tailored to your needs, you can simply add your own content and hit the Publish button.

But what if you want…something more?

If you wish to work more on your design and create a truly customized blog, I’d recommend using the Wix Editor.

It’s not as beginner-friendly, but it offers a much greater range of design tools as well as pixel-perfect editing.

If you do choose to use the Wix Editor, you will have to choose a template from Wix’s comprehensive theme library. There’s plenty of choice, with over 500 designs available. Think carefully about what you want your blog to look like, and consider playing with a few different templates before making your choice.

free blogging platform wix blog template choice

Once you do choose a template to base your blog on, you will be taken directly to the Wix Editor.

Here, you will be able to customize absolutely everything about your website, including how it looks, what elements appear where, and how different parts of your site should behave when certain actions are performed.

free blogging platform wix customization

The thing that Wix is most famous for is its drag-and-drop editor, which allows you to place elements exactly where you want them on your new blog. Simply select the element you want to move, drag it into position, and drop it where you want it.

free blogging platform wix elements

However, it is worth noting that the Wix Editor can be quite confusing the first time you work with it. The sheer number of tools available can be overwhelming, and I’d recommend spending a little time playing with it and understanding exactly how it works before you start creating your blog.

Take your time. After all, it costs nothing.

The Wix Blog Manager

Now, let’s get a bit deeper into the blog side of it all. It’s worth going there after all, as I was seriously impressed with Wix’s blog manager.

It brings all of your posts together in one place, allowing you to schedule new posts and view the performance of previously published content.

free blogging platform wix blog manager

When you’re ready to add a post, simply click the “Create New Post” button on the top right of the management dashboard. You will be taken to an editing window where you can write your posts, specify categories and SEO information, and add things like a cover image and excerpts for search engines.

free blogging platform wix adding blog

Wix is a solid option for blogs. It’s relatively easy to use, comes with a great range of features, and uses one of the most powerful editing interfaces out there.

Wix Free Blog Limitations

However, Wix’s free blogging platform does come with its limitations. Like most website builders, it requires a paid subscription if you want to unlock all of its features. Some of the constraints you will run into include:

  • A branded Wix subdomain, which can make it hard to build a professional online image.
  • Wix advertising spread through your blog.
  • No access to advanced features such as eCommerce.
  • Limited server resources.

Ultimately, these might be too much of a problem if you just want to create a small, personal blog. But if you wish to build something more serious, you can always upgrade to a free plan – all of these constraints remove with premium Wix plans, starting at $11 a month.

Pros

  • Choice of Wix ADI or Wix Editor.
  • Powerful free plan.
  • Simple blog management dashboard.

Cons

  • Wix Editor can be confusing.
  • Not the fastest blog creator in the world.

WordPress is all about blogging. It puts blogging first and everything else second. But while in its early days, it focused solely on that – over the past few years, it has expanded to offer complete website building services and a range of great tools.

I enjoy working with the WordPress.com platform, because it allows you to harness the power of the WordPress.org content management system without having to worry about things like hosting.

Basically, it simplifies the entire blog creation process, leaving you free to tweak your design and focus on adding content.

free blogging platform wordpress com homepage

What do those features look like, then?

For starters, WordPress includes great tools to help you promote your blog, including built-in SEO, social media integrations, and a range of different sharing features. Similarly, it looks after the technical side of things, providing high-quality hosting, automatic updates, and great security.

And, on top of everything else, WordPress blogs are automatically mobile optimized, which means they will look great on any device. Mobile optimization is also pretty clear when looking at things such as analytics. You will be able to access a range of such tools to monitor your performance.

Once everything is taken into account, it should become obvious why WordPress.com is one of the world’s best free blog platform picks. It offers great features that have been developed through years of industry experience.

WordPress.com Blog Builder

WordPress.org uses a block-based website builder, which means you won’t be able to simply throw content together as you could on some other website builders. This means limited design flexibility when creating your blog, as you’re just allowed to put specific elements in predetermined zones.

However, this isn’t always a bad thing, especially if you want to focus on creating written content rather than designing your website.

Thanks to the very simple system, building a new WordPress blog is as easy as clicking on the “Get Started”, filing in your contact information and picking a domain.

If you wish to start with a free plan (which makes sense) – simply choose the free domain from the domain options you’re given.

free blogging platform wordpress choose domain name

Once you’re done, there’s going to be plenty of help for you to get started. Quick guides and setup prompts are there to aid you.

free blogging platform wordpress start guide

All of this will be happening on the dashboard. From it, you can edit your design, add content to your blog, and view visitor insights, among other things.

free blogging platform wordpress com blog builder

Once I had signed up for a new blog, I headed to the “Themes” page to choose a design for my site. Although WordPress claims to have thousands of themes in its template library, you will only have access to 110 with a free subscription. But, most of these are quite well made, and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding an attractive one.

free blogging platform wordpress themes

Then, it’s going to be time to edit.

Sadly, that is going to be fairly limited. You will be able to add and remove content and modify your headers and footers, but don’t expect any advanced editing features.

free blogging platform wordpress com blog site

However, it’s worth noting that you will be able to check your blog’s appearance on desktop, mobile, and tablet browsers, allowing you to make sure that things are rendering correctly across different devices.

free blogging platform wordpress com mobile view

Once you’re happy with your general blog design, you can start adding content. Head back to your management dashboard and click on the “Posts” tab. Here you will find a list of your current and scheduled posts, allowing you to edit or delete them as needed.

Finally, WordPress.com’s post creation interface is quite intuitive and easy to use. It also uses a block-based system, allowing you to add headings, paragraph content, images, videos, and image galleries. You can also specify post attributes including categories, tags, and a feature image.

free blogging platform wordpress com blog list
free blogging platform wordpress com editing blog

All things considered, WordPress.com is one of the best free blog sites for those who want to focus on content creation rather than their overall design. I’d recommend giving it a go if you want to build a small personal blog to share your thoughts.

WordPress.com Limitations

While it’s one of the best free blog platform options, the free version of WordPress.com still has numerous limitations. Although it’s more than good enough for simple sites, you should be aware of the following:

  • Access to plugins and premium themes is reserved for premium subscribers.
  • You will have to use a branded subdomain and put up with platform advertising.
  • Only basic customization is available for free blogs.
  • Storage space will be limited, making it hard to host large image or video files.

Although none of these constraints are deal-breaking, you should keep them in mind. If you wish to remove them and have a worry-free blogging life – premium subscriptions will start at $4 a month.

Pros

  • Beginner-friendly dashboard.
  • Secure hosting and automatic software updates.
  • Decent selection of free themes.

Cons

  • Limited storage.
  • Lack of design flexibility.
  • No access to plugins or premium themes.

SITE123 is built with simplicity as its key focus – it’s one of the simplest free blog platforms on this list. It comes with quite an editing interface, that’s incredibly simple to master, making SITE123 a decent choice for those with little confidence and experience in making their own websites.

free blogging platform site123 homepage

SITE123 makes building a blog as simple as building a Lego house. What’s more – the principle is actually incredibly similar. You simply choose from over a hundred of possible block layout options and put them together according to how you like it. You don’t need any design knowledge, just have to know what you like.

free blogging platform site123 blog templates
You can choose from 8 different blog design options.

The interface is completely beginner-friendly. If I had to choose one builder for a total online novice to try, SITE123 would be my first pick.

Similarly, SITE123 also offers a great range of blog-specific features – but adding and managing them is going to be a breeze. Its management interface is very intuitive and its native commenting system is excellent. It also allows you to schedule posts, add an RSS feed, and integrate your social media accounts.

Overall, beginners are going to love this one. It’s a simple-to-use way to put together a lovely-looking blog. What’s not to love?

SITE123 Blog Builder

Starting your new SITE123 blog is very straightforward. You should be able to get online within a couple of hours if you want to.

All it takes is clicking the “Start Here” button – and you will be guided through the blog creation process.

First, you will be asked to specify what sort of website you want, which in this case will obviously be a blog (right?). Following this, you can name your website and create an account, and then you will be taken straight to the SITE123 editor.

free blogging platform site123 builder

Now, it’s important to realize that this editor is very basic, which means that it can be hard to create a highly-customized website. However, you will be able to change global design parameters like your color scheme and header style.

You will also be able to edit your existing content – but you won’t be able to edit your theme without a paid subscription.

Although it’s simple, I actually don’t mind using SITE123’s editor – it makes it easy to get online fast. Sure, the design freedom is limited, but you can build a blog during a lunch break, and that’s always a good thing.

SITE123 Blog Manager

We already talked about what it’s like to build a blog with this builder. But what it’s like to actually live with it? Well, SITE123 comes with a great blog management dashboard which allows you to take care of your posts, comments, and analytics from one central hub.

I found it quite intuitive and easy to navigate, and it’s a great option for time-pressured creatives.

free blogging platform site123 blog manager

For starters, the homepage of SITE123’s blog manager provides a brief overview of your published posts. From here, you can edit, duplicate, or delete posts as needed.

To create new posts, just click on the “Add New Post” button. You will be taken to a post-editing interface, where you can add content, specify tags, and schedule a publishing date and time.

free blogging platform site123 add new post
The editor is pretty basic, but it gets the job done.

Once your SITE123 blog is up and running, you will be able to follow up on comments and look at the performance of your posts through the “Comments” and “Insights” tabs, respectively.

I actually find the post-performance data quite useful because it is there to help anyone identify what’s working and what’s not.

Personally, I enjoy working with SITE123 blogs. The intuitive management dashboard streamlines processes which can otherwise become time-consuming and boring, and it’s very useful to be able to keep track of your posts and comments through the central blog hub.

SITE123 Free Blog Limitations

However, as it is kind of a trend here, SITE123’s free blog builder does come with some major limitations you should be aware of.

Although it’s great for simple, personal blogs, these constraints mean that it’s not a great choice for larger, business-oriented websites. Some of the most important issues of the free plan include:

  • Editing your blog’s theme isn’t possible with the free builder.
  • You will be stuck with a generic branded subdomain (which will be a mix of letters and numbers).
  • Server resources are severely constrained.
  • Analytics and post insights are limited.
  • A floating Site123 tag will always be present at the bottom of your blog.

As you can imagine, none of these constraints will affect the performance of your blog. But, if you are serious about your blogging, soon after signing up, you might want to upgrade to a premium plan. It’s going to cost $12.80 per month – a bit expensive, but maybe worth it to some.

Pros

  • Intuitive blog builder.
  • Great management dashboard.
  • Exceptional native comment tools.
  • Fast customer support.

Cons

  • Limited features with free plan.
  • Very little design flexibility.
  • Prominent SITE123 advertising.

Unlike most of the free blog platforms on this list, Medium doesn’t offer any sort of website building service. Instead, it works more like a social media network, allowing you to create an account and post your own content.

free blogging platform medium homepage

One of my favorite things about Medium is the fact that it helps you get the audience. As long as you categorize your content, Medium features your content in the specific topics, making sure that at least some readers reach you automatically – without you having to advertise your blog. To put it simply, much of your marketing will be taken care of for you.

This is great for those who are just starting out and don’t want to deal with the struggle of marketing their own website.

And Medium contains no advertising whatsoever, which will make your content more appealing to your readers.

free blogging platform medium no ads

You can get started with Medium by clicking on the “write” button at the top right of the homepage. Follow the prompts to sign up, and then head to your profile to start writing.

That’s it.

One thing I will note here is that Medium does have quite strict editorial guidelines. You can’t copy anyone else’s work or include any sort of advertising, including affiliate links or donation requests. Certain sensitive topics are also censored.

That’s not the only creative restriction you’ll be given.

Unfortunately, the Medium blog creation interface is quite limited, too. It works similarly to a standard word processor, which means you can add title and heading tags, images, videos, and more. However, you will have very little control over the layout of your post. If you explore the Medium website for a few minutes, you will see that all posts follow more or less the same structure.

free blogging platform medium blog post draft
White background. Same font. Full-width pictures.

Once you’ve finished writing, simply hit the “Ready to Publish” button at the top right of the editor. You will be taken to a new page, where you can change your post’s preview image and title.

You can also add up to five tags and select whether or not you would like your post to be recommended to interested readers.

After you’ve added the necessary information, you can either publish your post immediately or schedule it for later. Published stories and drafts will both appear in your “Stories” folder, where you can monitor them and their performance.

free blogging platform medium your stories
I’m a bit of a Medium novice, as you can see.

You can also access advanced statistics by navigating to the “Stats” tab, where you will be able to monitor how many readers, subscribers, and viewers you have had over a specified time period.

Medium also reports the number of “Claps” that each of your posts receive. Although this concept might be confusing at first, you can think of claps on Medium as similar to likes on Facebook.

free blogging platform medium claps
I’m not doing all that well.

Ultimately, Medium is a great platform for those who want to create a simple blog without having to use a website builder. You can be writing your first post within minutes of signing up, and you might even be able to earn a few dollars doing what you love.

Earning Money With Your Medium Blog

If you’re a great writer touching on interesting topics, you might be able to make some money with your Medium blog.

Joining the Medium Partner Program is the best way to do this, and you will be paid regularly when people read your stories.

Is it a viable business model? Well, over 60% of active Medium authors make money out of their posts, but only around 7% made more than $100. Some of the top authors make around $17,000-20,000 a month on Medium but of course, your beginnings are going to be much more humble.

Interested in joining?

There are six basic steps associated with the Medium Partner Program. First, you need to create your content. Pay special attention and make sure that it’s well-written and informative, or else people won’t want to read it.

Next, you have to specify that you want to earn through your post when you publish it. If your work is good enough, it could be chosen by the Medium editorial team, who will then recommend it to relevant readers.

free blogging platform medium monetizing

When subscribing readers view your blog, you will earn money. These earnings will be paid out to you every month, and you can continue to expand your audience by adding new content and gaining more followers. Basically, the amount you can earn with Medium is limited by your imagination and the amount of work you’re willing to put in. Oh – and whether the editorial team thinks you’re cool.

free blogging platform medium monetizing 2

Although you’re most likely not going to become a millionaire through Medium, it presents a great way to earn a few dollars doing what you love.

If you do use it, I’d recommend signing up for the Medium Partner Program – who knows, your next post might just go viral.

Medium Limitations

Medium isn’t a website builder, so it has quite a few limitations. I’ve outlined some of the most important here, but make sure you do a little research if you’re thinking about using it.

Some of Medium’s main issues are as follows:

  • You can’t build your own personalized website or profile.
  • It’s impossible to add anything other than blog posts.
  • Custom domains are completely out of the question.
  • The platform is quite competitive, which can make it hard to get you post seen.

If you just want to write and publish your work, Medium is great. However, you need to understand that it’s not a website builder, and it doesn’t really give you your own blog in the traditional sense. But it’s still a one of the best free blogging platform options to consider.

Pros

  • Very easy to use.
  • Requires no setup or website creation.
  • Includes potential to make money from your posts.

Cons

  • Limited formatting options.
  • Can be quite competitive.
  • No design flexibility.

Blogger is a blog-specific platform designed specifically for those who want to create small, personal blogs. It’s the best free blog platform for people who aren’t very tech-savvy, as it essentially allows you to sign up and start posting.

free blogging platform blogger homepage

How easy it is to use Blogger? Well, let me put it this way – it’s a Google product. Have you used Gmail? Google Drive? If so, you’ll be right at home.

free-blogging-platform-blogger-dashboard

Everything about this Blogger dashboard is aimed at one thing – helping you get your blog online with the least amount of fuss possible. It allows you to custom design the appearance of your blog if you want to, but you can also use a premade template if you find one that takes your fancy.

When it comes to Google integration, Blogger offers great integrations with Google Drive that allow you to store your content safely and securely. This makes it a great platform for those who plan on posting a lot of photos or videos, as it places no limits on the number or size of files you can upload.

Now – the analytics. Google Analytics is on top of the game there. And while many other platforms try really hard to offer Google Analytics as a feature – here it’s available straight out of the box, no setup needed.

Here you can monitor your traffic, see where it comes from, and what posts are performing well.

free-blogging-platform-google-analytics-dashboard

Finally, Blogger allows you to monetize your content. Basically, you can place Google AdSense advertising on your blog once you gain a decent following – gathering passive income every time someone clicks on an ad.

All things considered, Blogger makes a strong case for being one of the best free blog sites out there. It comes with a great range of features, and the fact that it focuses solely on blogging will only make it easier for beginners.

Creating a Blog With Blogger

Blogger is targeted at those who don’t have the time or energy to create their own blog website, and it’s therefore very straightforward and easy to use. To start building your own blog, all you need to do is sign into your Google account and hit the “Create New Blog” button.

You will be asked to provide a name and domain. You can also choose a theme, but I wouldn’t worry too much about that here – customize your blog’s appearance can be done later.

free blogging platform blogger make a blog

One important thing to note about Blogger is that it allows you to connect a custom domain for free. You will have to pay for domain registration, which could cost anything from a few dollars to hundreds per year. However, you can purchase your domain through the Blogger interface if you’d like, or you can simply continue with a branded subdomain without spending a cent.

free blogging platform blogger domains

Now, Blogger does allow you to customize your blog to some extent, but it’s quite limited. The sites are fairly basic and editing them, as well as adding some additional elements, can get a bit tricky.

You can do some basic editing though – just head to the “Layout” tab and reorder the elements. You can also add special widgets and gadgets to increase your site’s functionality.

free blogging platform blogger layout

More customization options can be accessed by heading to the “Themes” tab, where you will be able to change your global design settings.

Once again, Blogger is quite limited on the design flexibility front, but you can change things like your background image and the width of each element – which is a start.

free blogging platform blogger theme designer

Once you’ve set your new blog up, you can start adding posts, and this is where Blogger excels.

Surprisingly enough, the Blogger editing interface does not remind of the Google Docs one.

And yet, the given option does very well. It allows you to use different fonts and provides numerous editing options. You can even write custom HTML code if you would like to add special features to your post.

Similarly, you can add labels and categories to your posts, schedule them to be published at a later date, and add location tags where necessary.

free blogging platform blogger editor

All things considered, Blogger is one of the best free blog sites that I’ve used. It comes with a range of great tools, and it even allows you to connect a custom domain.

But of course, there are some limitations.

Blogger Limitations

Although Blogger is a great platform for creating personal blogs, it still has its limitations. For example, while it allows you to build a blog, you won’t be able to add more advanced features to your site.

A few of the constraints you will come across if you decide to use Blogger include:

  • Very limited design flexibility.
  • A small library of unimpressive themes.
  • An inability to build a website around your blog.
  • A lack of SEO options.

As you can imagine, Blogger is a good choice for those who want a simple free blog. However, if you wish to have something more than a basic page for your thoughts, go with something a bit more sophisticated, like Wix.

Pros

  • Add a custom domain for free.
  • Google Analytics included straight out of the box.
  • Simple and familiar Google-style interface.

Cons

  • Very limited design flexibility.
  • Pretty lackluster theme library.
  • Lack of SEO options.

Weebly is one of the biggest website builders in the world. And while its entire deal is centered around eCommerce options, it still offers a solid variety of free blogging tools.

Using its powerful editing interface, aspiring blog owners can create their own personalized website that looks exactly how they want it to.

The thing that makes Weebly stand out is its selection of professionally designed website and blog templates. Although it doesn’t have the biggest theme library in the industry, every template it offers is extremely well made and regularly updated to remain consistent with modern trends.

free blogging platform weebly templates

For example, a quick search for “Blog” templates reveals eight attractive designs. Each of these templates is feature rich, fully customizable, and mobile friendly.

On top of this, Weebly offers numerous blogging tools to help you maximise your efficiency and reach the largest audience possible. I particularly like the fact that it allows you to add custom SEO information, including title tags, meta descriptions, and URLs. And, you can even add custom code snippets to your header and/or footer for a truly customized experience.

Weebly also comes with an impressive App Center that you can use to add extra features to your blog. For example, a quick search reveals 41 blogging-related apps that you can add with the click of a button.

You will also find numerous apps to help you integrate different social media platforms, track your blog’s performance, and manage comments, among other things.

If your idea for a blog extends way beyond “sharing my thoughts”, and are a bit more business-centered, Weebly is going to be a great choice. It comes with a range of powerful statistics and analytics tools to help you understand your blog’s performance.

You can also connect Google Analytics if you want to delve even deeper.

All things considered, Weebly offers numerous tools that make it a great choice for those who want to create a free blog. Its professional template library stands out, and its professional analytics tools aren’t too bad either.

Weebly Blog Builder

If you’re interested in building your free blog with Weebly, you will need to sign up for a new account. From here, the blog creation process is quite straightforward, allowing those with even the most basic tech skills to get online.

To get started, simply click on the “Add New Site” button. You will be asked what sort of website you want to build and what theme you want to use.

I’d recommend taking a bit of time to explore the different blog templates available. Although there are only eight, each one comes with a unique design and specific features. Choosing the most suitable one for your needs will make your life easier in the long run.

Once you’ve chosen a blog template to use, you will be taken to the Weebly editor, where you can start to customize your design.

I enjoy using Weebly because it allows you to build more than just a blog. Different elements can be added via the menu on the left of the editor, while you can manage your apps, pages, and global design parameters via the menu at the top of the page.

At the same time, you can customize the appearance of your site by simply dragging and dropping different elements into position. You can also edit each element by clicking on it and using the menu that pops up.

Now, let’s talk about Weebly’s blog post creator. It’s pretty brilliant. Most editors allow you to add text, images, and sometimes, videos, but Weebly lets you add pretty much whatever you want to your posts by dragging and dropping different element blocks.

For example, the image below shows a blog post that I started creating. It includes a simple block of text, a map, and a contact form. You can even add custom code to your posts, so you really can include anything you want.

Unfortunately, Weebly doesn’t come with any sort of blog post management dashboard. If you want to edit or delete posts, you have to head to the website editor, find the relevant post, and click on it.

In the past, I’ve found this quite annoying and time-consuming. And I bet that this would be even worse when working with blogs that have hundreds or even thousands of posts.

Nonetheless, Weebly remains a great free blogging platform if you can ignore this minor inconvenience. It comes with the tools to help you build an attractive, feature-rich blog with room to grow in the future.

Weebly Limitations

Weebly’s free blogging platform does come with a range of limitations that could make it s bit harder to develop your blog. Like most website builders, it only makes advanced tools and features available to paying subscribers. Some of the constraints you should be aware of include:

  • Very limited storage and bandwidth.
  • Not being able to add a custom domain to your free blog.
  • Being forced to display Weebly advertising throughout your blog.
  • Being unable to access advanced analytics tools.
  • Limited customer support options.

If you want to build a simple, free blog, Weebly is great. However, if you want to create a larger blog that drives a lot of traffic, I’d recommend going for a platform that offers unlimited server resources. Alternatively, upgrade to one of Weebly’s paid subscriptions, which start from just $4 per month – and those dollars will be used for allowing you to connect your custom domain name.

Pros

  • Industry-leading blogging templates.
  • Powerful post creator.
  • Beginner-friendly editor.

Cons

  • Limited server resources.
  • No blog management dashboard.
  • Advanced analytics only allowed for paying subscribers.

Chances are, you already know what Tumblr is. This free blogging platform is also a massive social media platform.

Well, maybe was.

Overtaken in popularity by Twitter in 2016, Tumblr has been in a downfall ever since. And after the $1.1B acquisition by Yahoo! (as well as a ban on explicit content on August of 2018), this platform is basically flatlining.

But the drop in popularity doesn’t mean the drop in quality. In the summer of 2019, Tumblr was purchased by Automattic for a measly $3 million. This is the same company that owns and develops the whole WordPress platform, so they know a thing about blogging.

So, what is Tumblr now? And is it any good for blogging?

Actually, it kind of…is.

Tumblr is still populated by pretty solid communities following many topics. So if you interact with the right people, you’ll get some well-needed inspiration and will be able to create a community of your own.

And while it’s a social media platform, it doesn’t play the same “one size fits all” strategy something like Medium and Facebook would. Users can edit and customize their own pages, build communities, and connect custom domains. As a matter of fact, several major-level bloggers use Tumblr as their platform of choice. For instance, the Humans of New York website.

You can add whatever content you wish, and while there are some restrictions (the ban for explicit material is still present), you are largely allowed to build your own website and build your own community. If that’s what you’re looking for, you might want to give Tumblr a chance.

Building a Tumblr Blog

Overall, building a Tumblr blog is incredibly simple. You just create an account, choose a name for your blog and then, get to pick some of the topics that interest you.

What does that give you? A feed already filled with the content that suits your beloved topics.

But you’re not here to read – you’re here to write and post, right? Let’s get into what it’s like to do that.

It’s a basic text editor that doesn’t really make good use of all the space it’s given. You can, however, add headings and lists, format the text, and so on. Pretty regular programming.

There are also options to insert a custom URL, post later and so on. If interested, you can also switch to Markdown or HTML editors, which should be music to the ears of more code-savvy writers.

Now, what about customizing your blog? At first, it may appear that you’re out of luck, as Tumblr only lets your edit your cover image and a color scheme.

But dive deeper – and you’ll find a lot more. Tumblr has a massive first and third-party theme library that can take your blog and give it a brand new look in seconds. Here’s what my blog can turn into:

Day and night, huh?

You can join the fun, too. If you have some CSS and HTML coding knowledge, Tumblr’s your oyster.

Tumblr is a social media platform, but it has all the right tools to be perhaps the best free blogging platform on this list. The editor isn’t exactly inviting, but the editing freedom, and the community factor may make it very worthwhile for you.

Tumblr Limitations

Of course, Tumblr has its cons that may make you less interested in using the platform for blogging. Here are the main problems Tumblr has in blogging:

  • No add-ons or anything of the like. Things like eCommerce are possible, but only through a lot of pain, work, and third-party integrations.
  • Lack of advanced features. Looking to make a membership platform? Get a subscriber base? Tumblr won’t help you.

Pros

  • A massive library of various themes.
  • Simple to get started with.

Cons

  • In-depth editing requires HTML coding knowledge.
  • Content’s moderated – you can’t post what you wish.
  • Editor not very suited for text content.

How to Create a Blog?Basics of How to Create a Blog

Having the best free blogging platform is not enough. Once you’ve chosen a blogging platform, you will need to actually start building your blog.

If you don’t have any website building or design experience, this can be a bit tricky.

With this in mind, I decided to put together a short list of tips to help beginners get started. On this list, you will find information about the best ways to manage your blog, create new posts, and build a strong audience.

1. Stick to the Thematic Field

For starters, it’s important to keep your blog as specific as possible. Ideally, you should be writing about one general topic per blog, and it could be worth creating several blogs if you want to delve into different niches.

There are numerous reasons to tailor your blog towards a specific audience:

  • With niche articles, it’s easier to rank on search engines.
  • You will find it easier to attract relevant visitors.
  • You will be able to become an authority of the niche, building a brand image and character.

If you don’t know exactly what you want your blog to be about, I’d recommend sitting down and brainstorming for a while. “Everything” is a decent answer – but identifying your topic and your reader will help you target your content just a little bit better.

For instance, this blog is all about advising about websites. See?

2. Take Time to Set the Best Title

You should spend a bit of time thinking about your blog’s title. It needs to be engaging and interesting enough to attract readers, while relevant to your brand in some way. There are numerous things to consider when you’re brainstorming blog title ideas, but it’s worth keeping the following in mind:

  • The purpose of your blog.
  • What you hope to achieve through the blogging process.
  • The type of readers you’re trying to attract.
  • Your overall content strategy and the niche you’re working in.

For me, the most important thing is to make sure that your blog name is unique and easy to remember. To put it simply, people are more likely to visit your blog multiple times if it sticks in their memory.

Of course, then you’ll also have to consider a domain name. A .com domain name is the default, but a lot of them will be taken. Still – keep on searching. Ideally, you’ll get a .com domain that’s just the same as your blog name.

This one’s still available – consider it a gift from me.

3. Schedule Uploads and Retain Consistency

Working in the website building industry, I see a lot of people start a blog with high hopes and great ambitions. “I know what has to be done. A couple of posts and it’ll be great!”

Uhh, not so fast.

The vast majority of these people look after their blog for the first month or two and then simply forget about it when their lives become too busy or another hobby strikes their fancy. Or when they don’t get the same sparkly results they once expected.

If you really want to succeed in the competitive online world, you need to be consistent. Fortune favors the persistent ones.

It’s best to publish new posts at regular intervals so that your readers know when to check back for updates, or at least don’t keep your blog inactive for a few weeks or longer.

You might find it helpful to have a handful of “emergency posts” ready to go in case you don’t have time to create new content when you need to.

4. Be Patient

Finally, it’s extremely important to remain patient when you’re building your first blog. It will take you some time to get used to your blogging platform, even if you go with one of the beginner-friendly options I’ve outlined in this article.

Similarly, don’t expect to build a large audience overnight. Attracting new readers to your blog isn’t always easy, and you will probably need to put in consistent effort for a decent amount of time before you see any real results.

Things like social media marketing and a strong email subscriber list can help, too. Similarly though, if you won’t have a bottomless budget, expect the first results to be quite modest.

It’s okay. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one blog post. Or something like that, anyway.
