Top 7 Best WooCommerce Alternatives: Explore Your Options

In this post, I’m listing out 7 options that can be perfect replacements of the WooCommerce plugin. Each is suitable for slightly different users so you can pick one that would be most beneficial for your store.

I personally enjoy working with WooComerce as it is an easy-to-use and cost-effective eCommerce plugin. However, there are certain limitations.

And even if you’re a WordPress fan, I would strongly suggest checking out the fully hosted eCommerce website builders. There are some major competitors that earn their popularity not without a reason.

From what I saw, these are not only simple to manage, but also pretty powerful even for large stores. And having an easy-to-use inclusive eCommerce platform will save you time and struggle not only when building but also when maintaining your store.

Of course, you can also find other WordPress plugins that are created to bring our the best of your eCommerce. Cart66 and WP eCommerce would be a couple of simplistic but powerful tools. And I also wouldn’t want to exclude Magento as it is a really powerful eCommerce CMS.

List of WooCommerce Alternatives

So, after exploring dozens of eCommerce platforms with their pros and cons I selected the 7 of the best alternatives to WooCommerce.

Since each has its strengths and weaknesses, in the end, it’s your choice which would be the most suitable for your business. My goal here is to provide the info so you could make a fully informed decision.

Without further ado, the best WooCommerce alternatives (in no particular order) are:

When you first think of BigCommerce you probably think of a stand-alone eCommerce provider that offers complete solutions for large online stores. However, in reality, it’s much more than this, offering a WordPress plugin that makes it a great alternative to WooCommerce – for some people.

BigCommerce WordPress plugin

For me, one of the best things about this plugin is that it unlocks pretty much all of the native BigCommerce eCommerce features.

These include things like flexible payment gateways, the ability to sell on various marketplaces, secure user accounts, and various global shipping options

Therefore ultimately, the BigCommerce plugin is very well suited for large, content-based eCommerce stores.

There’s an extensive infrastructure that brings advantage in controlling your products, inventory, and sales. At the same time, BigCommerce allows using the WordPress content management system to add both written and visual content to your site.

BigCommerce content and commerce

Surely, WooCommerce lets you do similar. However, it can be harder to scale for larger stores and doesn’t offer the same features as the higher-end BigCommerce subscriptions.

Moreover, since BigCommerce offers cloud-based services it also helps take some load off your website’s servers. Resource heavy eCommerce processes will be managed by BigCommerce, leaving room for a lot more activity on your website. WooCommerce doesn’t offer this.

BigCommerce Pricing

BigCommerce plans start at $29.95/month and go up to $249.95/month. Compared to WooCommerce and many of the other alternatives to WooCommerce, it’s fair to say BigCommerce is relatively expensive.

Since you’re effectively using the same features as you would if you built your site directly through the BigCommerce platform, you have to pay for one of their subscriptions.

BigCommerce pricing

Even the cheapest BigCommerce plan, the Standard subscription, comes in at $29.95/month. If you want more features you will have to upgrade to the Plus ($79.95/month) or Pro ($249.95/month) plans.

Also, there are custom Enterprise solutions that are targeted at high-end stores with very specific needs.

Compared to WooCommerce, which requires payment only with optional extensions, BigCommerce seems really expensive. However, you might find that it’s a good option if you want to build a scalable, content-focused store with WordPress.

Pros

  • Easily scalable
  • Can reduce the load on your WordPress servers
  • Extensive range of eCommerce features
  • Designed for large stores

Cons

  • Expensive compared to WooCommerce
  • May require some web development skills to get the most out of it
  • No mobile app for on-the-go management

Wix is one of the most powerful drag-and-drop website builders available. Although targeted at small businesses and personal websites, Wix also offers strong eCommerce features that rival WooCommerce on many fronts.

But firstly, Wix and WordPress aren’t compatible. Meaning, to use Wix’s eCommerce you also sign up for a fully hosted website and there’s no way to integrate it to your WordPress.

So, that’s not really a viable option for people who want to use their existing WordPress site.

But if that’s not the main priority, Wix can be a good option as it is easier to use than WordPress and much more suited to beginners.

Wix stores

Since Wix is self-hosted, building your website requires only choosing a design template and customizing it. Compared to setting up a WordPress eCommerce store with WooCommerce, this is both time-effective and straightforward.

Although Wix only offers relatively limited eCommerce functions compared to WooCommerce and other eCommerce providers, it does what it does well.

Wix’s famous powerful drag-and-drop website builder lets you fine-tune the positioning of elements to create beautiful and unique storefronts.

Wix drag and drop editor

And the designs are responsive with all devices. Mobile responsiveness is more than possible with WordPress and WooCommerce but it can be harder to get right. Meanwhile, Wix does that pretty well automatically.

The eCommerce features include an intuitive store manager that lets you track orders, promote sales, manage shipping, and get payments easily.

Talking about payments, Wix excels by offering a range of payment options with absolutely zero sales commission.

Wix store features

And the price of Wix’s plans isn’t too high.

The simplest Wix eCommerce subscription, Business Basic, comes in at $18.00/month. However, this offers relatively limited features. If you want increased functionality you will have to upgrade to either the Business Unlimited ($28.00/month) or the Business VIP ($38.00/month) plan.

Wix business plans

Without having to cover the costs of hosting and domain, the price is fairly reasonable.

Overall, Wix is an extremely powerful website builder with decent eCommerce functionality. Although it can’t be integrated with WordPress as WooCommerce can, Wix offers an easy-to-use alternative for people who want to build a simple online store.

Pros

  • Attractive themes
  • Drag-and-drop website and store builder
  • Allows content-focused stores
  • Beginner-friendly

Cons

  • Doesn’t specialize in eCommerce
  • Relatively limited features
  • Not free

Weebly eCommerce is powered by Square – one of the world’s leading eCommerce software providers – and therefore offers a high-quality, secure service.

At the same time, it lets you harness the power of Weebly’s own drag-and-drop website builder and editor. Choose from a range of themes, fine-tune your design using the store editor, and modify your site’s code to achieve the exact look you want.

Weebly eCommerce

Traditionally, Weebly has focused on delivering premium website building services. However, it has improved the eCommerce options over the past few years, growing to become a serious competitor in the field.

However, it’s important to remember that it’s still a website builder with store functionality. Some of its eCommerce features are a little limited, especially when it comes to high-volume stores.

On the other hand, Weebly does offer quite good marketing and analytics. It lets you easily integrate your Facebook page and has a decent reputation for SEO. A range of analysis tools is available so that you can track your store’s performance and tweak your business plan as needed.

Weebly marketing tools

Weebly is a great option for people with limited tech skills who want to build an attractive store.

What makes it even more attractive is considerably low prices of the Weebly plans. You’ll find three eCommerce plans that begin with the cheapest, Pro plan, at $12.00/month. But it offers relatively limited features.

If you want to build a serious store I’d recommend the Business plan for $25/month. As for even larger stores that require extra marketing features, there’s the Business Plus plan ($38/month).

Weebly eCommerce plans

Of course, Weebly prices don’t compare to the fact that WooCommerce is free. But you have to keep in mind that with Weebly you won’t have to pay for hosting or other site management fees.

Ultimately, Weebly is a great choice for small businesses who want to harness the power of one of the best website builders out there to create their store. It’s easier to use than WooCommerce and offers comparable eCommerce features.

Pros

  • Powerful website builder
  • Affordable compared to eCommerce giants (Shopify, BigCommerce, etc.)
  • Attractive themes
  • Decent analytics

Cons

  • Somewhat limited features
  • Hard to scale for large stores and high traffic volumes
  • Confusing CMS

Shopify is an industry leader when it comes to eCommerce, powering over 800,000 active stores. However, comparing Shopify and WooCommerce is like comparing apples and oranges – they are two completely different providers offering very different functions.

But it remains one of the most popular alternatives to WooCommerce.

Shopify homepage

There are two ways to use Shopify to create an online store: you can use the Shopify store builder to create a stand-alone site or you can add Shopify features to your WordPress store.

To use Shopify with WordPress, go for the Shopify Lite plan which costs $9/month. It lets you add buy buttons and a payment gateway to your existing WordPress store.

Adding Shopify to WordPress

So this one works as WooCommerce – you will have to build your own self-hosted website with WordPress before integrating Shopify. But with Shopify, you get a lot of premium features that could become expensive if you would buy them as WooCommerce extensions.

However, from my perspective, Shopify isn’t the strongest in this form. In this scenario, I’d actually choose WooCommerce over Shopify as it is specifically designed for WordPress, versatile, and easy to use.

Shopify eCommerce features

The other option is the Shopify eCommerce with the website builder.

As a stand-alone eCommerce provider, the Basic Shopify subscription ($29/month) will give you access to hosting, a simple store builder, and a range of eCommerce features.

Shopify plans

You can access more features with the Shopify ($79/month) and Shopify Plus ($299/month) subscriptions. However, these options are a lot more expensive than building a self-hosted WordPress site and using WooCommerce.

The true power of Shopify reveals at the extensive app store.

Shopify offers over 2500 apps that are comparable to WooCommerce extensions. The store contains both premium and free apps that can help you do everything from improving visitor retention to increase the efficiency of your marketing campaigns.

Shopify apps

Shopify is a great alternative to WooCommerce – as both an addition to WordPress sites and as a stand-alone store builder. However, it is definitely the more expensive option, and because of this is will mainly suit larger websites that focus completely on eCommerce.

Pros

  • Comprehensive eCommerce features
  • WordPress integration or stand-alone store
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Easily scalable for large stores

Cons

  • Expensive compared to WooCommerce
  • WordPress integration is quite basic
  • Transaction fees for third-party payment gateways

Magento offers both open source software and extremely powerful custom eCommerce solutions. It’s a great alternative to WooCommerce if you have web development skills or the budget to employ an experienced developer.

I like Magento because it’s really powerful and it’s open-source eCommerce software, so for small stores, this can be a beneficial choice. Surely, even when the software itself is free, you’ll have to pay for hosting, a domain name, etc.

Magento open source eCommerce

However, I wouldn’t recommend using Magento unless you have strong coding and web development skills. Honestly, I found it pretty difficult to use at first. And it’s fair to say, Magento’s open-source software has been designed for functionality, not ease-of-use

But features Magento offers are incredible – even compared to traditional eCommerce giants like Shopify. And there are plenty of resources available to guide you.

Magento features

If, for some reason, you want features that aren’t included with the standard package, the Magento Marketplace contains extensions for pretty much everything you can imagine.

On the other side of the equation, Magento also offers high-end enterprise-level solutions for large stores.

Since these are custom solutions prices aren’t directly available, but a few customers I’ve talked to say Magento Commerce prices ranging from $1000/month to $4000/month. The price could be even more for very large stores and super high-end clients.

Magento commerce

In this form, Magento is basically the opposite of WooCommerce. However, it is an alternative for large stores that need a powerful and custom eCommerce solution

Considering all, Magento Commerce is only going to suit a small number of people – largely due to the cost – but Magento Open Source offers a great solution for technically advanced developers.

Pros

  • Extremely feature-rich
  • Custom solutions for enterprise-level clients
  • Free open-source option
  • Extensive resources and user documentation for developers

Cons

  • Magento Commerce is very expensive
  • Magento Open Source requires high-level developer skills

Cart66 is a WordPress eCommerce plugin focused on simplicity and security. It’s targeted for small store owners who don’t have the time or skills to work with more complicated plugins like WooCommerce or WP eCommerce.

An important limitation is that Cart66 is only designed for stores with fewer than 100 products. Other than that, any small store will have all that’s needed.

Cart66 WordPress eCommerce plugin

Since everything is included in one simple plugin, Cart66 can be installed and set up in a matter of minutes.

To simplify the process even more, it has the Cart66 LaunchPack.

That is a service for plugin installation and setup. For just $99 a team of experienced developers will install and set up the plugin on your WordPress website, fixing simple bugs and code issues at the same time. But that’s not mandatory.

Unlike WooCommerce, the Cart66 plugin isn’t free. But it makes sense, as it comes in an “everything included” package. Meaning add-ons and extensions aren’t necessary, or even available – you get access to all the features with the subscription.

Cart66 offers two plans. At the lower end, you will find the Essential Plan for $19/month. The other option – Complete Plan – costs $49/month.

Cart66 plans

There’s also a way to try out before purchasing. The 14-day free trial is available so you can get familiar with the software and decide if it’s right for you.

Comparing with the WooCommerce, the thing that annoys me is the monthly subscription fee. I’d rather pay a one-time fee for WooCommerce extensions than fork out $49 every month.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t change how convenient and easy-to-use Cart66 is. Small stores can definitely find it useful and time-saving and you get the free trial to test it out!

Pros

  • Feature-rich solution
  • Designed for simplicity of use
  • Great support network
  • Very secure

Cons

  • Expensive compared to other WordPress plugins
  • Not suitable for large stores
  • Hard to scale

WP eCommerce is a simple plugin that anyone who wants a basic WordPress store should consider. Powering over 36,000 stores globally, WP eCommerce is one of the best WordPress WooCommerce alternatives. It offers like-for-like WordPress integration and similar eCommerce features.

The standard WP eCommerce features are very similar to WooCommerce. Also, it offers a range of free and premium extensions.

WP eCommerce

The number of available extensions is lower, but they are cheaper than most of those offered by WooCommerce.

One of the major positive aspects of the WP eCommerce plugin is its ease of use. But at the same time, I must note that there most likely will be bugs and the lack of available help sources can be frustrating.

Still, the eCommerce features offered are well-rounded. And I found WP eCommerce’s global shipping calculator and sales manager particularly effective.

WP eCommerce features

I’d say that WP eCommerce is a decent choice for small stores targeting a global audience.

If you want more features than are offered by the standard version of WP eCommerce, there are numerous add-ons you can purchase.

For example, the Gold Cart add-on will increase your store’s functionality, giving you more options when it comes to the store layout and other features. It comes in at $99/year for a single site – quite good value when you consider the features included.

WP eCommerce add-ons

Personally, I would choose WooCommerce over WP eCommerce simply because it is more popular and more documentation exists.

However, the relative affordability of WP eCommerce’s plugins will make it attractive for people on a tight budget. Next to that, you may also enjoy working with the simple user interface that it offers.

Pros

  • Easy WordPress integration
  • Affordable add-ons
  • Free base version
  • Comprehensive shipping calculator

Cons

  • Fewer features than WooCommerce
  • Little how-to documentation
  • Difficult to scale

SummaryBest WooCommerce Alternatives: A Summary

Although WooCommerce is one of the most popular eCommerce providers out there, there are plenty of options worth considering before deciding how to create your store.

Traditional eCommerce platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce are easy to use and feature-rich. They are well suited to people who want to build large, scalable websites.

Wix and Weebly are website builders with strong eCommerce capabilities. Using either of these options will allow you to customize every aspect of your store while retaining access to most standard eCommerce features.

For advanced store managers, I’d recommend the Magento plugin. It offers both open source software and extremely powerful custom eCommerce solutions for enterprise-scale stores.

If you’re looking for WooCommerce alternatives that function in a similar way, then Cart66 and WP eCommerce are decent choices. Both can be added to existing WordPress websites in the form of a plugin.

Top 7 WooCommerce Alternatives: Recap

  1. BigCommerce – powerful eCommerce provider with WordPress integration.
  2. Wix – great for building customizable stores.
  3. Weebly – offers very attractive themes and decent eCommerce features.
  4. Shopify – a good option for beginners building a simple store.
  5. Magento – best for developers and enterprise-scale store owners.
  6. Cart66 – all-in-one WordPress plugin.
  7. WP eCommerce – like-for-like alternative to WooCommerce.
