When you first think of BigCommerce you probably think of a stand-alone eCommerce provider that offers complete solutions for large online stores. However, in reality, it’s much more than this, offering a WordPress plugin that makes it a great alternative to WooCommerce – for some people.
For me, one of the best things about this plugin is that it unlocks pretty much all of the native BigCommerce eCommerce features.
These include things like flexible payment gateways, the ability to sell on various marketplaces, secure user accounts, and various global shipping options.
Therefore ultimately, the BigCommerce plugin is very well suited for large, content-based eCommerce stores.
There’s an extensive infrastructure that brings advantage in controlling your products, inventory, and sales. At the same time, BigCommerce allows using the WordPress content management system to add both written and visual content to your site.
Surely, WooCommerce lets you do similar. However, it can be harder to scale for larger stores and doesn’t offer the same features as the higher-end BigCommerce subscriptions.
Moreover, since BigCommerce offers cloud-based services it also helps take some load off your website’s servers. Resource heavy eCommerce processes will be managed by BigCommerce, leaving room for a lot more activity on your website. WooCommerce doesn’t offer this.

Overall, Wix is an extremely powerful website builder with decent eCommerce functionality. Although it can’t be integrated with WordPress as WooCommerce can, Wix offers an easy-to-use alternative for people who want to build a simple online store.
Weebly eCommerce is powered by Square – one of the world’s leading eCommerce software providers – and therefore offers a high-quality, secure service.
At the same time, it lets you harness the power of Weebly’s own drag-and-drop website builder and editor. Choose from a range of themes, fine-tune your design using the store editor, and modify your site’s code to achieve the exact look you want.
Traditionally, Weebly has focused on delivering premium website building services. However, it has improved the eCommerce options over the past few years, growing to become a serious competitor in the field.
However, it’s important to remember that it’s still a website builder with store functionality. Some of its eCommerce features are a little limited, especially when it comes to high-volume stores.
On the other hand, Weebly does offer quite good marketing and analytics. It lets you easily integrate your Facebook page and has a decent reputation for SEO. A range of analysis tools is available so that you can track your store’s performance and tweak your business plan as needed.
Weebly is a great option for people with limited tech skills who want to build an attractive store.
What makes it even more attractive is considerably low prices of the Weebly plans. You’ll find three eCommerce plans that begin with the cheapest, Pro plan, at $12.00/month. But it offers relatively limited features.

Of course, Weebly prices don’t compare to the fact that WooCommerce is free. But you have to keep in mind that with Weebly you won’t have to pay for hosting or other site management fees.
Ultimately, Weebly is a great choice for small businesses who want to harness the power of one of the best website builders out there to create their store. It’s easier to use than WooCommerce and offers comparable eCommerce features.
Shopify is an industry leader when it comes to eCommerce, powering over 800,000 active stores. However, comparing Shopify and WooCommerce is like comparing apples and oranges – they are two completely different providers offering very different functions.
But it remains one of the most popular alternatives to WooCommerce.
There are two ways to use Shopify to create an online store: you can use the Shopify store builder to create a stand-alone site or you can add Shopify features to your WordPress store.
To use Shopify with WordPress, go for the Shopify Lite plan which costs $9/month. It lets you add buy buttons and a payment gateway to your existing WordPress store.

The true power of Shopify reveals at the extensive app store.

Magento offers both open source software and extremely powerful custom eCommerce solutions. It’s a great alternative to WooCommerce if you have web development skills or the budget to employ an experienced developer.
I like Magento because it’s really powerful and it’s open-source eCommerce software, so for small stores, this can be a beneficial choice. Surely, even when the software itself is free, you’ll have to pay for hosting, a domain name, etc.
However, I wouldn’t recommend using Magento unless you have strong coding and web development skills. Honestly, I found it pretty difficult to use at first. And it’s fair to say, Magento’s open-source software has been designed for functionality, not ease-of-use.
But features Magento offers are incredible – even compared to traditional eCommerce giants like Shopify. And there are plenty of resources available to guide you.
If, for some reason, you want features that aren’t included with the standard package, the Magento Marketplace contains extensions for pretty much everything you can imagine.
On the other side of the equation, Magento also offers high-end enterprise-level solutions for large stores.
Since these are custom solutions prices aren’t directly available, but a few customers I’ve talked to say Magento Commerce prices ranging from $1000/month to $4000/month. The price could be even more for very large stores and super high-end clients.
In this form, Magento is basically the opposite of WooCommerce. However, it is an alternative for large stores that need a powerful and custom eCommerce solution.
Considering all, Magento Commerce is only going to suit a small number of people – largely due to the cost – but Magento Open Source offers a great solution for technically advanced developers.
Cart66 is a WordPress eCommerce plugin focused on simplicity and security. It’s targeted for small store owners who don’t have the time or skills to work with more complicated plugins like WooCommerce or WP eCommerce.
An important limitation is that Cart66 is only designed for stores with fewer than 100 products. Other than that, any small store will have all that’s needed.
Since everything is included in one simple plugin, Cart66 can be installed and set up in a matter of minutes.

WP eCommerce is a simple plugin that anyone who wants a basic WordPress store should consider. Powering over 36,000 stores globally, WP eCommerce is one of the best WordPress WooCommerce alternatives. It offers like-for-like WordPress integration and similar eCommerce features.
The standard WP eCommerce features are very similar to WooCommerce. Also, it offers a range of free and premium extensions.
The number of available extensions is lower, but they are cheaper than most of those offered by WooCommerce.
One of the major positive aspects of the WP eCommerce plugin is its ease of use. But at the same time, I must note that there most likely will be bugs and the lack of available help sources can be frustrating.
Still, the eCommerce features offered are well-rounded. And I found WP eCommerce’s global shipping calculator and sales manager particularly effective.
I’d say that WP eCommerce is a decent choice for small stores targeting a global audience.
If you want more features than are offered by the standard version of WP eCommerce, there are numerous add-ons you can purchase.
For example, the Gold Cart add-on will increase your store’s functionality, giving you more options when it comes to the store layout and other features. It comes in at $99/year for a single site – quite good value when you consider the features included.
Personally, I would choose WooCommerce over WP eCommerce simply because it is more popular and more documentation exists.
However, the relative affordability of WP eCommerce’s plugins will make it attractive for people on a tight budget. Next to that, you may also enjoy working with the simple user interface that it offers.
Although WooCommerce is one of the most popular eCommerce providers out there, there are plenty of options worth considering before deciding how to create your store.
Traditional eCommerce platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce are easy to use and feature-rich. They are well suited to people who want to build large, scalable websites.
