The Best Website Builder For Artists? 7 Platforms That Fit The Criteria!

In this post, I’m going to list down the best website builders for artists as well as review the features that each one of them offers to suit every creator’s tastes.

For artists, getting seen and noticed online is a crucial part of success.

For that – you’ll need a website. And you can make it all happen with a good website builder.

What is the best website builder for artists to pick? It has to be visually appealing and attractive – offer attractive templates and modern designs that could be flexible enough to customize them to their style and language.

Sure – not every artist is the same. If you’re a photographer or visual artist, then gallery features are essential. Similarly, music producers will want to integrate some sort of media library into their website, while eCommerce features and the ability to sell digital downloads are a must for many artists.

Taking this into account, I’ve done in-depth research into a range of website builders to help you decide which one is the best for you and your type of art.

Wix is arguably the best website builder for artists out there. It offers superb design flexibility, pixel-perfect customization, over 500 attractive templates, and a very intuitive drag-and-drop website editor – all without you having to touch a line of code.

Ultimately, Wix excels on almost every level. And, as one of the industry leaders in the website building business, I wouldn’t expect any less. If you want to build a website to showcase your artwork, interact with your fans, or even just to make a bit of money, then Wix is a great choice.

Wix landing page

As you can see, Wix lets you do a wide range of things. Creating a personalized website is as straightforward as choosing a template and changing as much or as little as you would like. You can add pretty much anything you want, and all Wix websites are mobile-optimized automatically

If you’re an artist without a lot of web development or coding experience then you will love Wix’s ADI (artificial design intelligence) features. Simply work through a few quick steps, answer a couple of questions about the site you want, and Wix will come up with something that it thinks is right for you.

wix site creation

And I have to admit, every time I’ve used Wix ADI, I’ve been very impressed. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it has always given me a great starting point, no matter what sort of website I’ve been building at the time.

At the same time, Wix’s themes are also super impressive. It offers an attractive selection of templates for artists of all types, including painters, photographers, videographers, and musicians, among others.

I’d recommend browsing Wix’s template library before you start building your site. Some of the best websites for artists I’ve seen have been based on standard Wix templates.

wix template library

The features that Wix offers for artists also make it a clear winner in my eyes. Since Wix websites are fully customizable – that is, they aren’t limited by pre-coded placement options – you can pretty much add anything anywhere on your website.

Creating galleries and music libraries is very easy as well. You just navigate the menu on your left of the site editor and can add all types of galleries and music libraries.

adding a gallery in wix

Wix also offers an image editor that I found in the menu on the left, so if you want to create online galleries – you can make minor adjustments in Wix to reach the best looking results.

This artist website builder offers many in-house features that give the advantage to showcase your artwork online. However, even if you can’t find a native feature that does what you want, you will be almost sure to find something that you can use in the Wix App Market.

wix app market

I personally love the Wix Art Store app, which lets you create a very attractive, yet easy to use e-store to manage and sell your work. Similarly, the Wix Music app lets you stream and sell your music, and is a clear must-have for musicians.

wix art store

It’s impossible to touch on all of Wix’s features here, but I’d really recommend checking them out in your own time if you want to build an attractive, functional artist website.

Wix Artist Pricing

One of my favorite things about Wix is that it offers a great Free Forever plan for amateur artists. However, the free plan has some limitations – including the inability to add eCommerce features or connect custom domains – which means that a lot of artists will choose to upgrade to a premium subscription.

These range from $13/month to $39/month for standard website builder plans. However, these subscriptions won’t give you access to any eCommerce features.

wix pricing for standard websites

If you want to be able to sell your work then you will need to use one of Wix’s business and eCommerce plans. These start at $23/month and range to $49/month for the high-end Business VIP subscription.

wix pricing for ecommerce

All things considered, Wix is arguably the best website builder for artists who want to create highly personalized websites to showcase and sell their work. If offers a flexible design interface, a range of features, and a great App Market – it’s a pretty perfect artist website host.

Pros

  • Very flexible designs.
  • True drag-and-drop website builder.
  • Wide app marketplace.

Cons

  • The interface can be a little confusing.

Squarespace is one of the more versatile artist website builders available. With a range of beautiful templates and powerful features, Squarespace is a great choice for artists who want to spend a bit of time perfecting their website and adding specialized functionality.

squarespace homepage

Squarespace claims to be the “all-in-one platform to build a beautiful online presence”. As an artist, this should be exactly what you’re trying to do, right?

In this sense, Squarespace is a great choice for building artist websites. It offers some of the most attractive themes on the market. Although the range of themes that you can choose from isn’t huge, it keeps increasing each year. Right now Squarespace offers around 90 professionally designed templates.

Squarespace template library

Squarespace templates will help you build stunning galleries as they manage to find a great link between the use of white space and image placement – if you use them well, you can make some of the best websites for artists out there.

However, note down that the images you upload have to be the greatest quality or the website will end up looking far better than your template, as the templates rely heavily on art exposure.

Squarespace gallery
A gallery from the TALVA website template on Squarespace.

Luckily, the editor is fairly tidy and easy to navigate, which certainly works in Squarespace’s favor. You can access different parts of your site via the menu on the left, allowing you to edit your design, add and remove pages, manage eCommerce, and more – even though it’s not the best website builder for artists in terms of customization, the features will be more than enough for most.

squarespace site editor

The thing you should know that the overall site-wide changes can be applied using the menu on your left side, in the design section. However, if you want to drag-and-drop new elements and edit existing ones, the edit button on your left corner is the way to go.

In my opinion, that’s the only thing that can be confusing at the very beginning but you get used to it quite easily.

Similarly, setting up an online store is fairly straightforward – adding and editing products is rather easy – allowing you to spend more time creating art and less time selling it.

In my opinion, when using Squarespace you will find anything that you need in-house, and even if it lacks something – you can easily integrate as this website building platform started providing extensions recently.

Squarespace Artist Pricing

Unfortunately, Squarespace isn’t the cheapest website builder for artists. It has no free plan, and the lowest-priced subscription still costs $12/month. However, it has a 14-day free trial that you can use to try out the platform before committing to the chosen subscription.

This price increases to $18/month if you want to unlock more than the most basic features while setting up an online store will cost you at least $26/month.

squarespace pricing

Ultimately, Squarespace is one of the most versatile website builders on the market. Some of the best artist websites I’ve seen have been built with Squarespace, which is understandable when you see the features on offer. However, even its most basic plans are on the expensive side, but it’s definitely worth it.

Pros

  • All-in-one solution for site-building.
  • Beautiful design templates.
  • Simple eCommerce for artists.

Cons

  • Quite expensive.

GoDaddy Website Builder, the relatively new website builder by hosting giant GoDaddy, has rapidly grown to cement its position among the best website builders for artists. It offers attractive designs and a beginner-friendly editor.

Personally, I love GoDaddy Website Builder because of how easy it is to use. It’s certainly not the most customizable or most scalable website builder on the market, but it lets artists create basic sites in no more than a few hours.

GoDaddy Website Builder does claim to let you “Build a better website in under an hour”, but I felt that this was a bit of an exaggeration. Unless you know exactly what you’re doing, it will take you a couple of hours to get your site online – but I’m not complaining!

godaddy website builder landing page

The GoDaddy Website Builder website builder is centered on the fact that it offers a range of features for artists of all types while remaining very beginner-friendly and easy to use.

Unfortunately, GoDaddy Website Builder falls down on the design flexibility front. It offers a very limited selection of templates. On top of this, you won’t really be able to change a whole lot once you’ve chosen a template.

Sure, you can drag and drop elements to reorder them, but you can’t actually change their pre-coded positions or place them in alternative locations as your editing process is restricted by a grid layout.

godaddy website builder templates

But, the GoDaddy Website Builder website builder makes building a website so straightforward that I can almost forget about the lack of design flexibility.

If you choose the right template, all you need to do is personalize your color schemes and fonts, add and remove elements if you want to, and upload your own content.

godaddy website builder site editor

In fact, I’d argue that GoDaddy Website Builder is right up there with the best in terms of simplicity and ease of use. For me, it is the best way to build websites for artists if you’re short on time.

Another thing worth noting about the GoDaddy Website Builder is that it is probably the best artist website host out there in terms of performance. The websites built on this platform load fast, and your visitors are going to be pretty happy.

GoDaddy Website Builder Artist Pricing

GoDaddy Website Builder offers nothing special in terms of prices, but it’s not terrible either. The cheapest plan starts from $10/month, but you will need to pay for the Ecommerce plan ($25/month) if you want to sell your work.

It’s worth noting that GoDaddy Website Builder doesn’t offer any free plan, but it does let you test all of its subscriptions out with a one-month free trial.

godaddy website builder plans

Overall, I’d recommend GoDaddy Website Builder for artists who want access to a simple, easy-to-use website builder that offers great hosting solutions.

Although it is limited on the customization front, it does a great job with the basics and is a decent enough choice for people with limited tech experience.

Pros

  • Very easy to use.
  • Lets you get your site online fast.
  • Great hosting.

Cons

  • Very limited design flexibility.

SITE123 is one of my favorite website builders for a few reasons. While it’s certainly not the most customizable, the most feature-rich, or the best for large websites, it’s super easy to use and offers quite attractive designs – perfect for artists who want to showcase their work, but don’t have a lot of time to spend building a website.

SITE123 homepage

I love SITE123 because it lets you build a basic website in a matter of hours. It offers attractive enough templates and a decent range of features. I find the dashboard and website editor very intuitive, and I don’t see any reason why you would feel differently.

SITE123 keeps things simple, but functional. For example, all of their website templates are fully responsive, allowing you to create a site that will work on any device – a necessity in the modern world of smartphones and tablets.

At the same time, SITE123 offers everything you need to keep your website running, and running well. With a paid plan you will have access to 24/7 live support, a free domain, and a range of SEO tools, among other things.

You will also be able to add a simple store to your website so that you can sell your artwork. I love the SITE123 store manager, although it can get a bit complicated if you have too many products so I would offer it to smaller e-stores.

Similarly, SITE123 offers a decent choice of templates. They certainly aren’t the most attractive on the market, but they aren’t the worst either. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding one that you like, and from there it’s easy to get your website ready to publish.

site123 templates

SITE123 guides you through a simple three-step process to help you get your website online. Choose your template, name your site, and finally, edit your content.

site123 website creation process

Helpful hints pop up whenever you get to something new, making SITE123 a great choice for beginners. I know I keep saying it, but I love SITE123 because of how easy it is to use.

SITE123 editor guidelines

The website editor doesn’t disappoint either. Changing things like text, images, and layouts take seconds. Everything can be modified through the builder interface. You can even add pages, change your settings, and connect a domain – all without exiting the editor!

site123 editor

If don’t have a lot of time to build a website to showcase your work, SITE123 is a great choice. Realistically, you will be able to create a decent online presence in just a couple of hours if you use this website builder to showcase your art.

SITE123 Artist Pricing

Unfortunately, SITE123 does fall down a bit on the pricing front. While it offers a great Free Forever plan, the cheapest paid plan comes in at $12.80/month. Considering how basic SITE123 is, I felt that this was just too expensive.

site123 pricing

Similarly, the cheapest eCommerce plan, the Professional plan, comes in at $28.80/month, which is also quite expensive compared to other providers on this list.

If you’re willing to pay for the convenience, SITE123 offers a great way to build simple websites quickly. It includes everything you will need to build a basic art website to showcase and market your work, including online store features and a very basic builder.

Pros

  • Very easy to use.
  • Lets you build a website quickly.
  • Impressive features.

Cons

  • Quite expensive paid plans.
  • Limited design flexibility.

Zenfolio is something of a one-trick pony. Designed for photographers, Zenfolio makes it possible to showcase photos and visual artwork in attractive galleries and online stores that help you gather revenue while doing something you love.

If you want to build an attractive photography website, I’d recommend having a look at Zenfolio. If this isn’t exactly what you want to do, one of the other best artist website builders on this list is probably a more suitable choice.

zenfolio homepage

One of the things I like about Zenfolio is that it keeps things simple. Since it’s designed for photographers, it only includes photography-specific features. This means that you won’t get bogged down with useless functions and irrelevant site elements when you’re creating your website.

On the other hand, this is also the major thing that I have against Zefolio. Since it’s designed specifically for photography websites, it is limited when it comes to adding functionality and additional features.

In saying this, I found everything I wanted when I built my photography portfolio with Zenfolio. Some of the features are standard across the best artist website builders, including custom domain names, free templates, and responsive designs.

zenfolio features landing page

However, other features really stood out. One of these is the fact that Zenfolio offers unlimited photo storage. If you have a lot of photos, this is a great way to manage them. Other website builders offer limited storage, which can make it hard for photographers.

It’s also easy to get your website ranking well when you use Zenfolio. Adding content to the SEO friendly blog will help people find you through the major search engines, driving more organic traffic to your website.

Similarly, Zenfolio makes it easy to build an attractive website that people can engage with. It offers beautiful photo-specific themes that are a breeze to personalize.

zenfolio templates

All customization is done from the comfort of the Zenfolio website editor, which is quite beginner-friendly and easy to use. It doesn’t offer super design flexibility, but I was more than happy with the features that were available.

Zenfolio site editor

Zenfolio also makes it possible to add eCommerce features to your store. You can sell both digital copies of your work and physical prints, and the self-explanatory dashboard makes product management and order fulfillment easier than ever.

zenfolio dashboard

Sure, it’s not the prettiest store manager that I’ve ever worked with, but it functions well – and that’s what really matters in the end.

Zenfolio Artist Pricing

Zenfolio is more than affordable if you want to build a basic portfolio website. For just $5/month you can get access to the Starter plan, which lets you upload your work, organize it into libraries, and showcase it to your visitors.

However, you will have to upgrade to at least the Pro subscription if you want your store to have eCommerce capabilities.

zenfolio pricing

This will cost you $20/month, which is starting to be a bit on the expensive side. Zenfolio does offer a free trial, which means that you can try their products out without committing to a paid plan.

Ultimately, Zenfolio is a great choice for artists who want to build an attractive photography website. It’s probably the best website builder for artists – if those artists are purely focused on photography.

Pros

  • Unlimited photo uploads.
  • Simple eCommerce manager.
  • Cheap base plan.

Cons

  • Only good for photography portfolios.
  • Limited customizability.

Bandzoogle is the second specialized website builder on this list. As you might have guessed from the name, Bandzoogle offers music-specific website solutions, with a range of features to let you showcase and sell your tunes.

bandzoogle homepage

Although it’s obviously a bit limited in terms of who will find it useful, Bandzoogle is definitely one of the best artist website builders I’ve found that revolves around musicians. Since all of its efforts go into features to promote your music, it does these things very well.

For example, Bandzoogle makes it super easy to integrate an online store and sell everything from music to band merch. Add ticket booking, digital downloads, and even subscription-based services if you want – really, it’s up to you how you sell things to your audience!

bandzoogle features

At the same time, Bandzoogle offers a range of mobile-friendly themes that look great on any device. This is crucial in the modern world, where a huge percentage of internet users browse from their smartphone or tablet.

mobile optimized themes

As you can imagine, all of Bandzoogle’s themes are designed for musicians, keeping things simple and allowing you to upload your tunes and manage your audio library.

However, it doesn’t end there. Bandzoogle also offers a range of other features to help maximize your exposure and audience engagement. Take advantage of well-designed email templates and social media integrations to keep your fans happy.

Bandzoogle feature list

All Bandzoogle sites are also fully SEO optimized, helping you get discovered by new listeners. Keep track of the people visiting your website and listening to your music with a range of integrated reporting tools.

Finally, the Bandzoogle website builder is simple and intuitive. It lets you add and edit content at the click of a button and really makes things easy for musicians with limited tech experience.

bandzoogle site editing

As you can see, there are plenty of music-specific elements that you can add to your Bandzoogle site to help you showcase your work.

music specific elements in Bandzoogle

All things considered, Bandzoogle is great for musicians, and it’s quite affordable too.

Bandzoogle Artist Pricing

Although Bandzoogle doesn’t offer a free forever plan, they do provide a free trial with every single one of their subscriptions. If you decide to continue after your free trial, you will have to pay $8.29/month for the Lite plan (billed annually).

bandzoogle pricing

Alternatively, you can unlock all of Bandzoogles features for just $16.63/month, also billed annually.

As you’ve probably realized, I loved Bandzoogle. Although it’s only really useful for musicians, it really does offer some of the best music-specific features in the business. I’d recommend checking it out.

Pros

  • Brilliant musical features.
  • Intuitive website builder.
  • Very affordable plans.

Cons

  • Only useful for musicians.
  • No free subscription.

Weebly is a favorite in many artistic communities because of its attractive designs and eCommerce focus. Although it isn’t as flexible as Wix or as simple as GoDaddy Website Builder, Weebly is a foolproof choice with great features.

It also excels on the search engine optimization (SEO) front, which means that it’s a great choice for artists who want their work to feature in the Google search results.

weebly seo

I love Weebly because it makes things easy for artists with very limited web development and coding skills. In fact, you don’t really have to have any skills whatsoever to build a site – you will be guided every step of the way.

Since Weebly focuses on eCommerce, it’s also a good choice for artists who want to sell their work. Powered by Square – an industry-leading eCommerce software provider – Weebly really does excel when it comes to building and maintaining online stores.

weebly and square collaboration

However, it’s important to realize that Weebly doesn’t offer a lot of choices when it comes to design templates. Weebly only offers a fraction compared to other best website builders for artists on this list, and that could be an issue for some websites for artists.

For example, if you want to build a portfolio website, you will only have the choice of seven themes to start with.

weebly template gallery

In saying this, there is an upside to the limited number of themes that Weebly offers. Every theme is very well designed, updated regularly, and at the forefront of modern design trends.

This means that you can be confident of being able to build an attractive website if you choose to use Weebly.

At the same time, the Weebly website builder allows trouble-free site creation. I love the intuitive design and self-explanatory features, and in my opinion, it’s the best website builder for artists who want to find a balance between design flexibility and ease of use.

weebly site editor

The Weebly editor lets you add different elements to your website via the intuitive control panel on the left of the screen. You can switch between pages via the menu panel at the top of the editor, allowing you to change themes, apps, and edit your site’s settings.

As far as apps go, the Weebly App Center has a few great choices for artists and musicians, making it possible to both showcase and sell your work.

weebly app marketplace

For example, a quick search for ‘music’ apps gives ten options that will be useful for different people. I particularly love the Digital Downloads app, which makes it easy to sell all sorts of digital content.

Weebly Artist Pricing

Weebly offers some of the most affordable prices for artists who want to build a simple website. Its Free Forever plan doesn’t give you full access to their features, but it’s a good way for you to try out the website builder. If you do want to upgrade, plans start from $5.00/month for basic websites.

weebly pricing for standard websites

However, you will need to use the Pro plan or higher if you want to sell your work. Starting at $12.00/month, Weebly’s eCommerce plans are very competitively priced as well.

weebly pricing for ecommerce sites

To me, Weebly is a great all-round website builder that’s quite similar to Wix. Weebly doesn’t offer the same level of customizability and design flexibility, but it certainly takes the points on the eCommerce and SEO fronts.

Pros

  • Great SEO features.
  • Modern designs.
  • eCommerce focus.

Cons

  • A very limited number of design templates.
