In this article, I will review a list of best free website builders for artists while testing their features and performance, so you can find the best option out there!
A well-built, visually appealing website is a crucial part of showcasing your work as an artist.
But not everybody has the budget to just throw money around and build a perfect custom website.
No worries – this is where this list of the best free website builder for artists comes to help. You can build a beautiful site without investing too much time, and without spending a single penny.
And while there will be some limitations, there are still plenty of great builders that will help you put your art online – and to the next level!
There aren’t many free subscriptions among the website builders that would fit a lot of artists, however, these providers listed down here have a few good things to offer, even with their free plans. Let’s take a look.
The best free website builders for artists (in no particular order) are:
As an industry leader in the website building business, Wix offers a range of attractive templates for artists of all types. It also provides a decent free plan that isn’t too limited, earning it a place on this list of the best free website builders for artists.
However being a free plan that it is, it won’t let you connect a domain, you will have to deal with a Wix branded subdomain and there will be Wix ads on the website.
All limits aside, let’s take a closer look at what can artists can gain using this platform for free.
A quick online search will show you that Wix has a great reputation and is liked by most users in the web design space – and for a good reason.
Wix offers great flexibility, beginner-friendliness, time-saving portfolio-building experience, and pixel-perfect customization. Such features will be found useful by many artists that want to get their work online.
In terms of showcasing artwork, Wix offers very attractive themes for one way of building your art website. That option would consist of picking a template that you liked and then customizing it further to your heart’s content.
Especially because Wix provides a lot of creative freedom as you’re not restricted by any type of layout or grid. You can place content and visual elements in any place on your page.
However, that may results in a massive clutter in a website, if not done carefully, as creating a cohesive design all throughout the page can be way more time consuming due to having no restrictions.
Choosing an attractive theme for your website is quite difficult with Wix, simply because it offers so much choice. As a creative artist, you will have access to more than 500 beautiful themes. Simply choose the one you like and start editing.
Be careful, though, as you can’t change a theme of your Wix website after picking one.
Although these themes obviously differ, the ones listed under the “creative” category offer certain artist-specific features. For example, you should have access to a gallery where you can showcase your best work. Similarly, many of the themes come with a blog set up so that you can go into more depth about certain pieces.
There’s also another way to build a website while using Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence). If you choose this option it will ask you to complete a short questionnaire and will create a custom template according to the answers provided.
It’s a quicker method for artists to get online, however, it would end up costing you flexibility while customizing provided templates. That is because Wix ADI and Wix Editor offer two different editing interfaces. One being the fast and easy option to create and host your website, and another – the flexible choice that everyone keeps talking about.
Besides its pretty templates, Wix also offers a broad app market that can be used to artists’ advantage.
On top of this, the Wix App Market contains a range of extensions to help you get the most out of your website. My personal favorite is the Wix Art Store, a free app that lets you manage, market, and sell your art with as little fuss as possible.
It also seems like you can add the Wix Art Store to a free Wix site – which is a great way to get around without paying for an eCommerce subscription.
However, if you do want to unlock full eCommerce features, including a full management dashboard and shipping tools, you will need to upgrade to a paid subscription. The cheapest of these is the Business Basic plan, which comes in at $23/month.
Overall, Wix is a great option when it comes to building free websites for artists. Its free plan offers a range of useful features, allowing you to showcase your work in an attractive, easy-to-navigate gallery. Upgrading to a paid business-related subscription will unlock full eCommerce functionality for your art website.
Jimdo is a versatile website builder offering two different editors: the Jimdo Creator and the Jimdo Dolphin. Both of these can be accessed with a free plan that includes a range of features to help you showcase your art.
Of course, the free plan will still contain provider’s ads on your website and won’t let you connect a custom domain – same as all providers on this list.
One of the reasons I like Jimdo is because it actually provides a complete guide to creating an art portfolio website. It contains a suite of information that will help you build a site with Jimdo, website examples of portfolios, and therefore is perfect for artists with limited tech experience.
Before I go any further I should explain the differences between the two Jimdo website editors.
Jimdo Dolphin is a website builder that has Artificial Intelligence (AI) and makes custom website templates tailored specifically to the answers you provide after filling in the questionnaire provided.
It will let you build a simple artist website fast and efficiently. The interface is beginner-friendly and full of attractive looking elements that you can add to your website.
On the other hand, the Jimdo Creator interface is designed for people with more web development experience. It offers a lot more customization potential and gives you access to your site’s code.
I’d only recommend using this if you have a lot of coding skills – the Jimdo Dolphin editor is more than good enough to build a decent free artist website, and I’ll focus on it for the rest of this article.
Although it is a little limited, the Jimdo Dolphin editor still lets you add things like artwork galleries and showcases. The free plan is quite feature-rich, but it comes with a Jimdo subdomain and very limited support.
If you want to add eCommerce or other high-end features to your Jimdo website you will need to upgrade to a paid subscription. Adding eCommerce will cost you $15/month but will give you the option to sell your work.
Alternatively, get access to support and add a custom domain with the Start plan for just $9/month.
Ultimately, Jimdo Dolphin is a great choice for artists who want to build a free website fast. Based on AI technology, it will help you come up with an attractive design for your site. You will be able to edit this design to your heart’s content, but, like with most free plans, you will have to upgrade to a paid plan for the full range of features.
Some of the best free websites for artists are built with Weebly, and for good reason. Weebly has very strong SEO features in its free plan, which makes it a great choice for artists who want to build a portfolio that can be noticed online. It also offers a decent enough free plan.
Like Wix, Weebly is a great general artist website builder. Although best for portfolio style websites, it’s by no means limited to these.
Weebly offers a range of attractive themes, many of which have been professionally designed for creatives. Building a website is made as simple as choosing a theme that suits your needs and starting to edit it.
Moreover, the Weebly App Center has a lot to offer to artists. It contains hundreds of different apps that you can use to build your website, many of which are designed for artists. For example, a search for “gallery” gave me over 30 different apps that you could use to showcase your work.
I also really enjoyed using the Weebly editor. Although it isn’t the most powerful out there yet, Weebly stands out because it keeps things simple.
Everything is organized in a neat sidebar on the left of your screen, while you can navigate between pages, change your theme, and add more apps to your site by selecting the relevant tab at the top of the editor.
Weebly’s free subscription is limited, but no more so than any of the others on this list. If you want to add a custom domain, sell your work, or remove Weebly advertising you will have to upgrade to a paid plan. If not, the free plan does just fine.
Weebly’s paid plans start from just $5/month, with eCommerce features available for $12/month. Overall, Weebly is one of the most affordable website builders for artists – if you do decide to upgrade past a free plan.
Weebly is another great free option for artists who want a simple website. It offers a range of features, a diverse App Center, and SEO Tools for free.
Strikingly is one of the easiest free website builders for artists. It claims that you will be able to “make a website in minutes” if you use the platform, and I can hardly argue. It’s super easy to sign up with Strikingly, and they offer some great artist-specific features.
I’d recommend using Strikingly if you don’t have a lot of time and just want to put together a quick website to showcase your work.
Strikingly’s features are standard as far as artistic websites go, including attractive designs and the ability to create galleries, so Strikingly will do just fine if you want to build a simple site.
However, I do want to spend a bit of time looking at Strikingly’s themes. Unlike most of the other website builders on this list, Strikingly doesn’t offer professionally designed themes.
Instead, it showcases a wide range of websites that have been built with their editor, allowing you to base your design on someone else’s site.
Personally, I love this. I think it’s a great idea to be able to create a portfolio based on something that you know works, and there are literally hundreds of options that you can choose from.
Strikingly also impressed me as far as eCommerce goes. Although its free plan doesn’t offer any eCommerce capabilities, you will be able to sell a limited amount of work for as little as $8/month. This is one of the cheapest options for artists with a budget.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to a higher-end plan and unlock more features – but I don’t think that you will really need to do this unless you want to build a complex website.
Talking about building – the actual site creation process is super easy. Simply pick a template and start editing. If you don’t want to add too much content or make major changes to the design, you should be able to build a functional website in no more than a few hours.
The builder dashboard is tidy and very intuitive, and it’s very easy to do things like add a gallery or showcase certain works.
All things considered, Strikingly comes out as the best free website builder for artists who want to create a simple website quickly. It offers decent features, affordable eCommerce, and an easy-to-use editor.
B12 is arguably the best AI-powered website builder. Offering true artificial intelligence, B12 will scout the web to come up with the best design for your artistic website.
There’s even an option to work alongside a team of developers to fine-tune your site – of course, for a tremendous amount of cash.
However, the B12 website builder manages to offer something for free as well.
Instead of letting you sign up for a plan and build your own website, B12 will do all the hard work for you. All you have to do is tell the AI builder what you want, sit back, and wait for your site to be delivered.
Showcasing your artwork is very easy with B12. You can fine-tune your site’s galleries to make sure that they present things exactly the way you want them to.
At the same time, you will be able to request the addition of any other elements you want, such as featured works, reviews, or even how-to videos. B12’s designers will then work with you to add these elements to your site.
However, the problems with B12 arise once you’ve finished building your website. From the minute its AI delivers your site, you will effectively be left on your own. They don’t offer any support unless you upgrade to a paid subscription, and these are expensive.
Even the cheapest paid subscription will cost you $26/month, and it still doesn’t offer phone support or even any SEO features. Higher-end plans cost as much as $224/month for the SEO Pro plan, which is way too expensive in my opinion.
Although B12 provides a great way to build a free website for artists to showcase their work, you need to be aware of its limitations. It is expensive if you need to upgrade to a paid plan, and the free plan offers no support and limited server resources.
Sure, a free subscription of a website builder should work only as a little bus stop before reaching your targeted destination. Free plans do have their limits and won’t look professional. In most cases, you won’t be able to connect a custom domain and will be stuck with something like www.yourartgallery.wixsite.com.
The domain name isn’t the only limitation. While there are many builders that let you showcase your artwork in a clear, appealing manner, it was near-impossible to find a website builder for artists who want both a custom domain and an online store for free.
For all that, you’ll need to invest at least a few dollars per month – and we have a great post on the best website builder options that cover some of the greatest ones.
All limitations aside, my only advice is that you should pick a website builder that you can see the final version of your art website on.
Choose something that you enjoy using, and are happy to spend several hours on. From then on – the only way is up.
And to wrap it all up, let’s go all the way back and do a short recap of the best free website builders for artists:
Wix boasts one of the most powerful drag-and-drop website builders on the market. It makes it easy for you to create appealing galleries that are highly customized.
Jimdo comes complete with two ways of creating an artistic website – Jimdo Dolphin and Jimdo Creator. While Jimdo Dolphin being the easier option to get online with an attractive gallery.
Weebly is another great all-round website builder for artists that is especially suitable for portfolio style sites.
Strikingly is very easy to use, boasting a simple editor and a great free plan with a variety of unique themes to choose from.
B12 offers complete hands-off designs, with a comprehensive AI website builder and a team of experienced developers available for free. It’s a great option for artists who want a website without having to build it themselves.
