What Is The Best Portfolio Website Builder In 2020?

Building a website and developing an online presence is a great way to gain followers and increase your popularity. It doesn’t matter if you’re a creative, a photographer, or a small business owner wanting to showcase your work – online portfolios work extremely well.

As a writer and website developer, I know from experience that it can be hard to choose the best portfolio website builder for your exact situation. With each builder calling itself the “best option” (we already solved that one in our best website builder article!), it can get a bit tricky finding out which one really suits your specific needs and goals.

Which is why I have compiled this portfolio creator list.

I looked at everything from visual appeal and ease of use, all the way to advanced marketing and eCommerce options to choose the providers for you.

And while all of these options are different in their own way, I’m fairly confident that you’ll find at least one that strikes your fancy.

Wix is an industry-leading website builder – and it leads the industry for a reason. It’s a great option for portfolio websites because of its powerful drag-and-drop editor and unrivaled design flexibility. With dozens of portfolio-oriented designs and attractive themes, it’s pretty simple to showcase your work, but there’s also pixel-perfect editing available, so you can edit your website to look just the way you want to.

Now add that to great eCommerce and business features for promotion, and you get a solid starting package for any kind of a portfolio website.

wix homepage

I found it pretty easy to get started with Wix – but the first step is easily the most important. This is where you’ll have to choose between two website editors – Wix ADI and the classic Wix Editor.

wix design choice

If you want to build a quick portfolio website, Wix ADI (artificial design intelligence) is a good option. Combining AI and attractive designs, Wix ADI can help you put together an attractive portfolio website by answering a few questions.

wix adi editor

If a premade website tailored for you in 60 seconds doesn’t spike any interest, then you’ll definitely appreciate the more elaborate standard Wix Editor. It’s a bit more complicated and harder to get started with than the Wix ADI builder, it offers much more design flexibility and customization potential.

This means you can change any and every part of your site. Elements can be dragged and dropped into place with pixel-perfect precision, and you can even access your site’s code if you want to fine-tune your design.

Personally, I really like using the Wix Editor because of the level of customization it allows, but I don’t always find it very easy to navigate.

The editing interface can be confusing at times because of the sheer number of tools available, and it’s certainly not the simplest portfolio website builder for beginners.

wix main editor

However, you don’t have to edit your site all that much. You can simply choose one out of several hundred available templates, insert all of your media, information, and you’re good to go!

Wix offers one of the best template libraries of any of the major website builders, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a design you like.

For example, a quick search for a “portfolio” template reveals over 40 choices, but there are also numerous designs dedicated to things like music, photography, and visual art.

wix portfolio themes

When I was writing this article I had a quick play around with some of Wix’s niche-specific portfolio features.

I particularly liked the fact that it lets you integrate things like music players and responsive image galleries to showcase your work. In fact, many of Wix’s niche portfolio templates already have these features included.

wix editor elements

Meanwhile, the Wix App Market contains a great range of apps that let you add even more advanced features to your website. One of my favorite Wix apps is the Wix Art Store, which lets you showcase, sell, and manage your art through one intuitive dashboard.

wix art apps

All things considered, Wix is a pretty decent option for those who want to build a visually appealing portfolio website. On top of its powerful editor, it also offers quite competitive eCommerce features for those who want to sell their work.

Wix Portfolio Website eCommerce

Many artists and other creatives include some sort of online store when they build a portfolio website. Wix makes it quite easy to integrate a shop with your portfolio, allowing you to market your work to a wider audience.

Now, you might choose to use the Wix Art Store app if you want to sell visual art or photos, but you can also add eCommerce features directly to your website. Wix integrates with most modern payment providers, gives you access to great store management tools, and offers customizable product pages.

wix online store features

At the same time, Wix stores integrate seamlessly with all Wix websites, which makes management and order fulfillment very straightforward.

Overall, Wix offers decent tools for those who want to add a small store to their portfolio website, but I wouldn’t use it for its eCommerce features alone.

Wix Portfolio Pricing

Wix offers seven paid plans and one Free Forever plan. But I don’t recommend choosing the free plan – a Wix subdomain and a large Wix ribbon on your portfolio isn’t the most professional look.

Premium Wix portfolio subscriptions will cost from $13/month to $39/month and three eCommerce plans range from $23/month to $49/month.

Those who want to build a portfolio website but don’t need eCommerce features will find the Combo ($13/month) and Unlimited ($17/month) plans quite useful. The Pro ($22/month) and VIP ($39/month) come with more advanced features, such as adding additional customer support and visitor analytics, as well as a professional logo.

wix regular pricing

Wix’s eCommerce plans are great for those who want to be able to sell their work. The Business Basic plan comes in at $23/month and lets you add a simple store to your website. The Business Unlimited and Business VIP plans will cost you $27/month and $49/month respectively and offer increasingly advanced eCommerce tools and features.

wix business pricing

It’s worth noting that Wix also offers custom business plans for enterprise-level clients, but that already goes way beyond the needs of a regular portfolio website.

Overall, Wix’s prices are on par with most similar website builders. They aren’t anything special, but they certainly aren’t too high either.

Wix Portfolio Example

Once I’d finished reviewing Wix’s portfolio-building capabilities, I had a quick look at a few examples of Wix websites. I came across the Steve Wolf Designs site, which really stood out to me as a great example of the portfolio features that Wix offers.

wix portfolio example

With a visually engaging layout, a small online store, and a simple yet functional design, this website embodies everything I imagine a portfolio site to be.

wix portfolio example 2

All things considered, Wix is a great option for a portfolio website, as it offers you a freedom of choice and customizability. There are plenty of great templates, pixel-perfect editing and tools that can turn your portfolio into so much more.

Pros

  • Powerful and customizable website builder
  • Great portfolio-specific designs
  • An option between a simple and powerful editor

Cons

  • A very limited free plan
  • The standard editor may take time to master

For many, a good portfolio website is the one that attracts attention. And Squarespace is the best portfolio website builder for that – it has beautiful templates that would make your portfolio pop right out of the screen.

And it’s not all just looks – Squarespace also offers some solid eCommerce and marketing tools.

squarespace homepage

Building a visually appealing portfolio is essential if you want people to actually appreciate your work, which is why Squarespace’s design power is so highly regarded. I loved playing around with its templates, and I bet that someone with a superior feel for design would be able to turn any of them into custom, stunning websites.

squarespace portfolio themes

At the same time, Squarespace also provides great marketing and SEO features to help your portfolio get found. For example, its native email marketing interface lets you grow and manage your subscriber list from the comfort of your website dashboard.

squarespace portfolio marketing

What is it like to build a portfolio website with Squarespace? Well, it does take a bit of getting used to, as the system is very different to a lot of similar products in the market. However, once you get the hang of it, it becomes fairly straightforward.

It’s also a little limited as far as design flexibility goes, and you will find yourself pretty much confined to the pre-coded layout of the template you choose. Unless, of course, you’re fluent in coding – in which case, Squarespace gives you a fair bit of freedom to adjust things to your liking.

squarespace portfolio editing

Having said that, Squarespace does offer some powerful features – including the ability to add a storefront to your portfolio website – if you’re willing to spend some time to figure them out. Rather than relying on plugins and apps like many website builders do, Squarespace’s developers have tried to create native solutions for pretty much everything

squarespace portfolio ecommerce

Overall, Squarespace offers some of the most beautiful website designs available. It also comes with a great selection of website and eCommerce features, which means that it’s a great choice for building your portfolio site – if you can get the hang of using it.

Squarespace Portfolio Pricing

Squarespace is one of the more expensive providers on this list. It offers four plans ranging from $12/month to $40/month with the option to change or cancel your plan whenever you want. Squarespace also offers a free trial so that you can test its builder out before committing to a paid subscription.

But even though Squarespace portfolio website plans are a bit expensive, you get a lot for your money.

The Personal one, coming in at $12/month, offers many more features than the base plans of other providers on this list. It includes unlimited storage and bandwidth, 24/7 customer support, and powerful SEO tools.

Upgrading to the Business plan ($18/month) will give you access to all of Squarespace’s marketing tools, along with simple eCommerce features. The Basic Commerce ($26/month) and Advanced Commerce ($40/month) plans come with more and more advanced online selling tools respectively.

squarespace portfolio pricing

Although Squarespace certainly isn’t cheap, you basically pay for what you get. Since it comes with some of the best design templates available, along with a decent website builder and fairly advanced eCommerce tools, I certainly wouldn’t say it’s overpriced.

Example Squarespace portfolio

To show you just how attractive Squarespace portfolios can be I had a quick look at the website of artist Laura Berger. At first glance, this site seems quite simple, but it has absolutely everything it needs, including a gallery, social media links, and a simple online store.

squarespace portfolio example 1

I particularly like the projects tab of this website, which makes good use of Squarespaces gallery features, and shows some of the artist’s work being used in real-life situations.

squarespace portfolio example 2

Everything about this website speaks of just how powerful Squarespace can be. If you want to harness the power of some of the world’s most beautiful website design templates, then I’d recommend signing up for Squarespace’s free trial and giving it a go – you’ll be matching the best portfolio websites in no time.

Pros

  • Beautiful design templates.
  • Powerful native tools and features.
  • Decent eCommerce integration.

Cons

  • Expensive base plans.
  • Confusing editing interface.

Previously known as a hosting provider, and hosting provider only, GoDaddy has recently dipped its toes into the website builder game.

And let me tell you – the result is pretty great. I’m a big fan – you will be as well, if you’re looking to build a portfolio website in as little time as possible. GoDaddy Website Builder is fully focused on simplicity, and it does things very, very right.

godaddy website builder portfolio homepage

I explored the GoDaddy builder to see how fast I could realistically get a site online. First, I signed up for a new account. This took all of a few seconds, and then I was guided through a short questionnaire to help GoDaddy put together an attractive design for me.

godaddy website builder portfolio editing

And that was it for me, and it’s going to be it for you. Then, it’s all about repopulating the website with your own content and clicking “Publish”.

However, GoDaddy also gives you the option of choosing a different design template if you don’t like the one it initially provides. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t give you a lot of choice when it comes to portfolio-style designs, which is one of the things I found a bit limiting.

For example, if you want to build an “art & design” website, you will only have 11 different templates to choose from.

godaddy website builder portfolio templates

The GoDaddy website builder is also quite limited. You can personalize your website to some extent, but you will be largely confined by the pre-coded design of the theme you choose. There’s no pixel-perfect editing to get true “custom” look you may desire.

This made it quite hard for me to achieve the look I wanted, but I am quite fussy. If your sole aim is to get your work online, then GoDaddy’s designs are more than good enough.

At the same time, GoDaddy provides basic eCommerce tools to help you sell your work. Adding a simple storefront to your portfolio takes no more than a few minutes and things like inventory management and order fulfillment are streamlined.

godaddy website builder portfolio online sales

On top of that, there are also a lot of great marketing tools, that will help you get noticed on social media and search engines.

All things considered, GoDaddy’s website builder is a solid choice for people who want to build a simple portfolio site with additional business features, without spending too much time.

GoDaddy Website Builder Portfolio Pricing

The GoDaddy website builder offers four different pricing plans ranging from $10/month to $25/month. It’s not super cheap – but pretty good, compared to many other leading website builders, so it’s a pretty solid option for portfolio websites.

The Basic ($10/month) and Standard ($15/month) plans offer quite limited features, but they are more than sufficient for basic portfolio sites, including marketing and booking features, as well as an ability to connect a custom domain.

If you want more advanced features and better marketing tools, then the Premium ($20/month) plan is a great choice. Finally, GoDaddy’s Online Store ($25/month) plan provides an affordable option for those who want to add a simple eCommerce storefront to their portfolio website.

godaddy website builder portfolio pricing

All things considered, GoDaddy’s Website Builder comes solid value for money. It also gives users access to a one-month free trial (no credit card required!), which means you can give it a try before you commit to anything.

Example GoDaddy portfolio website

For your viewing pleasure, here’s one of my favorite portfolio websites make using the GoDaddy website builder. It’s the Anthony Friend Photography website. It encompasses everything that the GoDaddy website builder is known for, including simplicity, an attractive but minimalistic design, and very fast load speeds.

I especially like this website’s “Beauty” and “Men” pages, which are great examples of GoDaddy’s gallery features. They aren’t even slightly cluttered and I actually spent quite a while just browsing through them.

godaddy website builder portfolio example

As you can see, it’s more than possible to build an attractive portfolio website with the GoDaddy builder.

Pros

  • Very beginner-friendly.
  • Good value for money.
  • Solid marketing features available in all premium packages.

Cons

  • Limited customization.
  • Not a lot of themes to choose from.

Are you a blogger or a writer, looking not only for a pretty but also a functional portfolio? If so – you need a platform that puts blogging at its very core. For that, I can only recommend WordPress.com.

A blog builder first, and everything else second, it’s a great option for those who want to build a portfolio website with a blog connected. Also, it offers very affordable entry-level pricing plans.

wordpress com homepage

Personally, I like WordPress.com because of the powerful features it offers. For example, WordPress.com provides great portfolio-specific tools that you can use to create your personalized website. You can upload and integrate photos, videos, music, and other media files to your site, which allows you to showcase your work.

At the same time, adding things like image galleries and music players is quite easy through the WordPress.com editor. Although it doesn’t allow drag-and-drop editing, it’s actually one of the simpler website builders I’ve used.

The design interface is very intuitive, and I had no problems adding simple portfolio features and content to my new site. I also like the fact that WordPress.com lets you edit the HTML code for every page of your website, which makes it quite customizable.

wordpress com portfolio editing

At the same time, I found the WordPress.com dashboard intuitive and easy to navigate. It lets you add new pages, customize your global design, change your template, and add plugins, among other things.

And oh – WordPress has one of the largest and most diverse plugin libraries out there, so you’ll be spoiled for choice.

wordpress com portfolio apps

The template library is pretty amazing as well. With its low-end plans, WordPress offers some great designs for visual artists, writers, musicians, and more. Upgrading to the Business or eCommerce subscription will give you access to even more templates.

wordpress com portfolio themes

Although it’s famous for its blogging features, WordPress.com is a great choice for small portfolio websites as well. It offers an intuitive design interface and management dashboard and lets you install a range of plugins to streamline things like SEO and content management.

WordPress.com Portfolio Pricing

WordPress.com offers five different pricing levels, including a functional Free Forever plan. Its cheapest paid subscription comes in at just $4/month, but adding a storefront will cost you $45/month, which I found quite expensive.

If you want to explore WordPress’s features, then you should start with its Free Forever plan. It is very limited, with a WordPress subdomain, advertising, and few server resources. Upgrading to a Personal plan ($4/month) offers a cost-effective way to connect a custom domain to your website.

Similarly, the Premium plan ($8/month) offers more features again, including simple marketing tools and access to a premium template library. Things do start to get a bit expensive with the Business plan ($25/month), but it does provide 200GB of storage, the ability to integrate plugins, and premium support.

Finally, if you want to sell your work, you will have to pay $45/month for WordPress.com’s eCommerce subscription. This is quite expensive compared to some of the other providers on this list, and I personally wouldn’t use WordPress.com for eCommerce.

wordpress com portfolio pricing

All things considered, WordPress.com offers very affordable low-end plans, but it gets quite expensive if you want to add an online store to your portfolio.

Example WordPress.com portfolio

I had a quick look at a few portfolio websites built with WordPress.com, and I was pretty impressed by what I found. For example, the Studio Signorella graphic design portfolio encompasses simple yet effective design techniques.

wordpress com portfolio example 1

Based on a minimalistic two-page design, it includes an attractive gallery, social media links, and contact details. Really, this is all you need to showcase your work, and I’d imagine that they’re only using the $4/month Personal plan. And if not – such a website would be very easily possible with it.

If you do a bit more searching you will find plenty of WordPress.com portfolio websites that you can use for inspiration, including some which incorporate both a portfolio and a blog.

Pros

  • Great blogging features.
  • Affordable base plan.

Cons

  • No drag and drop editor.
  • Premium features can get seriously expensive.

Strikingly is great in the single-page website building field. It offers beautiful one-page designs, that can help anyone make a very simple portfolio with no bells and/or whistles.

Personally, I see this approach working pretty well for something like CVs. Promising that you can “make a website in minutes”, Strikingly really is this simple, and it requires no special design or coding skills to get started.

strikingly portfolio homepage

So yeah – as far as industry-leading website builders go, Strikingly is quite a simplistic portfolio creator. But, this doesn’t stop it from offering a range of tools and features to help you build an attractive single-page portfolio website.

For example, Strikingly makes it very easy to add basic eCommerce features to your website with their “simple store” module. Likewise, you can also add contact forms, a social media feed, and a simple blog if you’d like to.

strikingly portfolio features

And the templates aren’t all that bad either. A quick search for portfolio templates revealed almost 50 attractive existing sites.

strikingly portfolio themes

Once you’ve chosen a design template Strikingly also makes it possible for you to edit pretty much any aspect of your website. I found its editor pretty intuitive and easy to use, which is great for those who just want to get a portfolio online with minimum fuss. You’ll just get to combine a bunch of section together to reach your desired result – and that’s it!

strikingly portfolio editing

Strikingly doesn’t give you access to your site’s source code, but it does let you add and edit HTML and CSS with its higher-end plans. It also lets you sell your work through its simple store interface.

All things considered, I actually really enjoyed using the Strikingly website builder. It’s quite intuitive, beginner-friendly, and feature-rich. It gives you the ability to build a simple yet powerful single-page portfolio site with eCommerce and social media integrations.

Strikingly Portfolio Pricing

Along with its basic Free Forever subscription, Strikingly offers three paid plans. These range from $8/month to $49/month with annual subscriptions, but significant discounts are available if you pay for two, three, or five years at a time.

strikingly portfolio pricing

Strikingly’s Free Forever plan effectively lets you try its builder out but offers very few server resources and features. The Limited plan ($8/month) is just that – limited. It lets you connect a custom domain and add a simple store with up to five products, but that’s about all.

The Pro plan ($16/month) starts to include some more advanced features, including the ability to create multiple-page websites and add more products to your store. Finally, the VIP plan ($49/month) gives you access to Strikingly’s email marketing interface, priority support, and account management services.

Although Strikingly’s prices don’t stand out, it certainly doesn’t offer bad value. I’d recommend testing the builder out with a free trial before committing to a paid plan, but I think you’ll find that either the Limited or Pro subscription is a good choice for your portfolio.

Pros

  • Modern single-page designs.
  • Affordable subscriptions.
  • Intuitive website builder.

Cons

  • Very limited free plan.
  • Basic eCommerce.

If you’re looking for a website builder that specializes in modern design, then Weebly has you covered. Although it’s now more of a eCommerce-first option, Weebly also has a range of portfolio-specific features that you can use to showcase your work.

And this combination makes Weebly one of the best portfolio website builders for those who want to sell their work.

weebly portfolio homepage

Fully focused on website growth, Weebly can also be the perfect tool if you have any future aspirations to turn your portfolio website into a proper selling platform. It allows you to list thousands of products and comes with a suite of great online selling tools.

Weebly also excels in the ease of use and design fronts. Although it only offers seven different portfolio templates, every one of these is regularly updated with the latest design features. They are fully responsive and mobile optimized, and they come with SEO friendly code files. Since visual appeal is a core feature of successful portfolio websites, this is a big plus.

weebly portfolio themes

Once you’ve chosen your theme, the Weebly editor gives you the freedom to personalize things to be the way you want. Although it doesn’t offer the most powerful website building interface, the editing process hits just the right balance between ease of use and extensive options.

weebly portfolio editing

One thing that I particularly like about the Weebly editor is that it lets you modify the mobile version of your website without affecting the desktop version. This is a great feature for those who want to make the mobile version of their portfolio simpler and easier to navigate than the desktop one.

weebly portfolio mobile editing

I enjoy using Weebly because of its foolproof editing interface and the powerful eCommerce features that it offers. Some of the best portfolio websites that I’ve seen have been built with Weebly, and I’d recommend it for those who want to build a small to medium site with the potential to scale.

Weebly Portfolio Pricing

Weebly offers competitive website builder plans that are comparable to those offered by most of the other providers on this list. It comes with a Free Forever subscription, along with four paid plans ranging from $5/month to $38/month. High-end plans come with powerful eCommerce features.

If you want to try Weebly out, then the Free Forever plan is an okay option, but it comes with very limited storage and a branded subdomain. You can add a custom domain to your portfolio with the Connect plan ($5/month), while the Pro plan ($12/month) includes unlimited storage and basic eCommerce features.

weebly portfolio pricing

Spending $25/month will give you access to the Business plan, which comes with advanced eCommerce statistics and a range of great online selling tools. Finally, the Business Plus subscription ($38/month) includes the Weebly Promote email marketing system and a real-time shipping calculator.

weebly portfolio business pricing

While competitive, most of Weebly’s prices aren’t anything special. It’s worth focusing on the Pro plan, which gives you basic eCommerce features for just $12/month

Example Weebly Portfolio

Weebly can certainly be used for portfolio websites – and kikoplastics.com is a shining example of that. It is both visually appealing and easy to navigate, and it shows off everything that Weebly does well.

weebly portfolio example

Along with an attractive homepage gallery which showcases some of the artist’s work, this website also includes a simple store and individual pages for the best projects in the portfolio.

As you can see, Weebly is a great choice for building attractive portfolio websites. It has powerful eCommerce features and impressive design templates, and I’d recommend it for those who want to integrate an online store with their portfolio.

Pros

  • Modern templates.
  • Great eCommerce features.
  • Useable free plan.

Cons

  • Very small template library.
  • Somewhat limited design flexibility.

Zenfolio is a photography-specific website builder that helps people create attractive portfolios quickly and efficiently. Although it’s something of a one-trick pony, it’s up there as arguably the best website builder for photographers who want to showcase and sell their work.

Getting started with Zenfolio is very easy, and it even offers a free trial for those who aren’t sure if it’s the right option.

zenfolio portfolio homepage

Although the template library isn’t huge, each of the available designs make it easy to showcase your photos in an intuitive, visually appealing manner. Also, all of Zenfolio’s themes are fully mobile optimized and responsive – but in the 2020s, that’s entirely expected.

zenfolio portfolio themes

I also found the photography-specific features that Zenfolio offers to be quite attractive. For example, it makes integrating things like galleries and slideshows quite easy, especially if you’re willing to play around with the editor for a while.

Similarly, Zenfolio gives you access to unlimited photo storage, which makes it a great place to store your work. You can upload high-resolution files, add custom watermarks, and protect private galleries with passwords if you need to.

zenfolio portfolio features

Meanwhile, Zenfolio’s website editor is quite intuitive and beginner-friendly, which means that you won’t have to waste too much time putting your portfolio together. It only took me a couple of hours to create a simple portfolio.

Similarly, Zenfolio’s built-in management dashboard lets you look after everything in one place. For example, it lets you upload photos, create and edit galleries, and set product prices without difficulty.

zenfolio portfolio ecommerce

If you try to sell your photography, you will notice that Zenfolio’s eCommerce dashboard isn’t the most attractive. But, the simple fact is that it works. It lets you do everything you need to, including setting prices, managing your inventory, viewing and fulfilling orders, and adding discounts or coupon codes.

zenfolio portfolio editing sales

Finally, Zenfolio also lets you add a simple blog to your photography portfolio. This is great for photographers who want to showcase their regular work without featuring it in their portfolio, and I’d definitely recommend taking advantage of it.

zenfolio portfolio blog

In short, I do like using Zenfolio. In my opinion, it’s probably the best portfolio website builder for photographers, simply because of the photo-specific features that it offers.

Zenfolio Portfolio Pricing

On top of everything else, Zenfolio offers a very affordable pricing structure. Plans start from just $5/month, and range to $30/month for a top-end subscription. All of Zenfolio’s plans include unlimited photo uploads and 24/7 support.

zenfolio portfolio pricing

If you want to build a simple photography portfolio and don’t need any eCommerce features, then Zenfolio’s Starter plan ($5/month) is a good choice.

Upgrading to the Pro plan ($20/month) will give you access to a range of eCommerce features, allowing you to market and sell your work.

Finally, the Advanced plan, which is $30/month, comes with high-end photography tools, including pre-ordering, a green-screen editing interface, and multi-user accounts.

It’s worth noting that Zenfolio does offer a free trial for all new users, and it also offers significant discounts if you’re willing to pay annual subscription fees.

All things considered, Zenfolio’s prices are very competitive. There are very few other providers that let you build a portfolio and sell your products for just $20/month, so I’d definitely consider using it if you want to showcase and market your photography.

Pros

  • Great photo-specific tools.
  • Affordable prices.
  • Effective eCommerce features.

Cons

  • Limited to photography websites.
  • Builder doesn’t offer a huge amount of design flexibility.

IM Creator is designed “by creators, for creators”, and some creators will absolutely love it. It offers great portfolio features, lets users get online quickly, and is completely free for selected people, including artists and students.

And if you qualify for the free subscription, well – you will get a premium product. Designs are cleverly categorized, and you will find options for everyone from photographers and musicians to graphic designers and tech developers.

im creator homepage

At the same time, all of IM Creator’s templates are professionally designed and come fully responsive and mobile optimized.

I also like the layout of IM Creator’s website builder. Once you’ve chosen an attractive template you can add and remove elements, modify existing elements, and integrate niche-specific features.

im creator portfolio editor

Because of its clever, block-based design, IM Creator’s website builder allows you to add and remove content without affecting the rest of your website. You can also change things like the color and font within each block, which gives you a decent level of design flexibility.

im creator portfolio themes

However, it’s worth noting that while IM Creator’s website builder is very beginner-friendly and easy to use, it doesn’t offer even close to the same level of design flexibility as most industry leaders. You’re stuck to whatever a theme has, and they’re not so amazing, that you wouldn’t see at least something worth improving.

Overall, IM Creator is a decent choice that I’d recommend checking out further, especially if you’re an artist not looking for anything groundbreaking, and want to get online fast. It’s also worth exploring its free license to see if you qualify – it might save you a bit of money!

IM Creator Portfolio Pricing

IM Creator has a free plan, an $8/month premium plan, and a $350/year white label plan.

IM Creator states that “students, artists, & non-profits” can build websites for free.

However, the definition of artists isn’t really explained, and it could include people like graphic designers, musicians, and writers – or not. Everyone’s situation is treated differently, so it’s worth applying for a license and seeing if you make it.

However, IM Creator’s Premium Account subscription only costs $8/month, which means that it’s still an affordable choice, even if you don’t qualify for the free plan. It includes unlimited bandwidth and disk space, basic eCommerce, and you can connect your own domain.

Finally, IM Creator also offers a Pro Package for $350/month which lets you build unlimited websites for your clients. However, it’s not a portfolio website option anymore – it’s an option some web designers might like to use to build websites with.

im creator portfolio pricing

IM Creator is one of the cheaper portfolio website builders available, even if you don’t qualify for a free license. It’s simple to use and could be useful for many looking for a basic portfolio website.

Pros

  • Free for selected people.
  • Allows you to get online fast.
  • Clever, block-based website builder.

Cons

  • Limited design flexibility.
  • eCommerce tools are very basic.

format portfolio templates

Alongside this, Format’s editing interface provides great design flexibility, allowing you to put together the portfolio of your dreams. Its website builder is quite intuitive and 100% customizable if you have the ability to edit HTML and CSS code.

format portfolio gallery

I also like the fact that Format lets you manage your site’s design, content, and eCommerce store from one simple dashboard. This is great for those who want to spend more time doing the things that they’re good at and less time editing and managing their website.

Overall, I’d recommend Format for those who want to use a simple but powerful website builder with a range of portfolio-specific features. It’s a great choice for people with basic HTML and CSS coding skills, and it also lets you add an online store to your portfolio.

Format Portfolio Pricing

The Format website builders is one of the best portfolio website builders on this list, when it comes to the prices. Premium subscriptions start from just $6/month, and all features can be unlocked for just $25/month. All of Format’s plans also come with a two-week free trial.

format portfolio pricing

If you’re an amateur artist or creative who simply wants to showcase your work, then Format’s Enthusiast plan ($6/month) is a great option. It lets you add up to 15 pages, unlimited blog posts, and a custom domain. It also comes with unlimited bandwidth.

Upgrading to Format’s Pro plan will cost you an extra $6/month ($12/month total). However, it will let you add a basic eCommerce store to your portfolio and will let you edit your site’s CSS and HTML code.

Finally, Format’s Unlimited plan will cost you $25/month, but will let you upload unlimited images, add up to 1000 products to your store, and access a range of premium themes for free.

All things considered, I’d recommend giving Format’s website builder a go if you want to build a visually appealing portfolio to showcase your work. It offers powerful features at quite low prices and is certainly competitive with the more popular providers on this list.

Pros

  • Portfolio-specific builder.
  • CSS & HTML code editor.
  • Attractive design templates.

Cons

  • No free forever plan.
  • Need to upgrade to Unlimited plan for full eCommerce features.

Offering two website builders, Jimdo’s covering all the bases – you can both make a quick portfolio website in just a few minutes, or go neck deep into editing and leave with something completely custom. So yes – Jimdo is a portfolio website builder for everyone. Should you be interested?

There are two builders to choose from – the Jimdo Creator and the Jimdo Dolphin. Jimdo Creator is aimed specifically at coders and web developers, which means it’s not the best choice for building basic portfolio sites.

jimdo portfolio homepage

On the other side of the. right, there’s Jimdo Dolphin, which is intuitive and requires no special skills. And it also offers decent enough portfolio templates that you can base your site on. Every one of its portfolios are fully mobile responsive, with great design flexibility and customizability.

At the same time, the Jimdo Dolphin website builder is very intuitive and beginner-friendly. Its clever AI design assistant will guide you through the setup process, making sure that you start with a template that meets your needs.

jimdo portfolio choosing website

I’ve used Jimdo’s AI website builder a few times, and I’ve always been impressed with the design it has come up with.

Even if you don’t like your starting design, Jimdo’s editor makes customization easy. Although it’s basic, this editor is very easy to find your way around and changing colors, fonts, styles, and other basic design feature is straightforward.

jimdo portfolio editing

At the same time, Jimdo lets you quickly add and customize a simple store, which makes it a great option for those who want to sell their work. It doesn’t offer the most advanced eCommerce features, but it’s more than usable if you don’t want to list too many products.

Jimdo Portfolio Pricing

Jimdo offers an attractive range of subscriptions for its website builder. Prices range from $9/month to $39/month, but there is a free option as well.

jimdo portfolio pricing

If you do decide to start with Jimdo’s Play plan (free), you will have access to all of the builder’s basic features, along with limited server resources and storage.

Upgrading to the Start plan ($9/month) will let you connect a custom domain and remove Jimdo ads.

And the Grow plan ($15/month) will unlock SEO and analytics tools.

Finally, the Unlimited subscription ($39/month) gives you access to eCommerce features, premium support, unlimited storage and bandwidth, and professional design help.

Overall, Jimdo doesn’t do too badly at all on the pricing front. Both its Start and Grow plans are affordable choices for portfolio websites, however, the eCommerce at $39/month is just a bit too much.

Pros

  • Clever AI design assistant.
  • Simple but attractive designs.
  • Beginner-friendly editing interface.

Cons

  • Design flexibility is a little limited.
  • eCommerce is very basic.

How To Make A Portfolio Website? How to make a portfolio website?

At its core, the concept of building a portfolio website feels pretty simple – just dump a bunch of your work into a website. How hard can it be? Well – there are still a lot of things to consider.

So here are some tips for building your portfolio website.

1.Select Your Best Work

First of all, select your best work – you want viewers to get a good impression of your capabilities. You may immediately think that this is like having to choose your favorite child! However, most people don’t go through a lot of work when deciding whether a professional is good or not.

Displaying 10 great pieces is so much better than 10 good pieces and 90 average ones.

And if you’re uploading visual content, make sure it doesn’t get ruined by the website optimization. They have to load quickly and look good, so always make sure that your website builder does a good job of displaying the images in their original form.

And of course, you have to make sure that the visuals that you upload complement or at least don’t get ruined by your selected website builder.

For example artist Laura Berger’s portfolio site (built with Squarespace) is created with very few elements. Looking at the artwork of simplistic and bold shapes this website style is just enough to highlight the work being showcased.

On the other hand, some portfolios look much better when they are more haphazardly designed, with different projects slotted in where they fit. The Steve Wolf Designs website does this well, highlighting more important works by enlarging them and placing them in more prominent positions.

The Studio Signorella graphic design portfolio is a great example of this. Beginner-friendly website builders like GoDaddy Website Builder and WordPress.com excel when it comes to simple portfolio design templates.

building portfolio display work 3

Take some time to find what specific pieces you are the proudest of showing – and then, choose a website builder and a template that fits the style as much as possible.

As your online portfolio is often the first thing prospective clients will see, it’s extremely important to make sure that your portfolio is well designed and that it showcases your work in the most effective way possible.

2.Make The Website Comfortable

When the website visitor enters your website, you want them to focus on the work you do – not on the complicated menus, navigation, or all the fancy levers and buttons that you found.

An interesting layout does add personality – but make sure that personality is not obnoxious. Meaning that the website has to be easy to view and navigate.

Clearly listed images, easy to find contact info or business details – all that creates a smooth impression. But it’s a slippery slope. When building your portfolio website, you need to ask yourself. Do you want it have…

  • Extensive image galleries showcasing your work?
  • Social media integration displaying your latest posts?
  • Testimonies from your previous clients?
  • Examples of your work being used in practice?
  • A blog for your thoughts?
  • An online shop to sell your products?
  • A booking system for your services?

If you answered “yes” to at least 5 questions, congratulations – your website is at risk of being cluttered. But consider this a challenge. By keeping only the most important features and separating them into relevant pages, you can make your website browsing experience very pleasurable. Think of the user first, and you’ll always win.

building portfolio comfortable website

Maintaining your portfolio website up to date makes a good impression for the site visitors. But it is also good for yourself – this way you may better see how your skill improves and evolves.

3.Be Visible Online

Even if you’re not planning on being found online, and simply want a portfolio for your future employers, being seen and found on the internet can only be good. And the most important first step for that is getting a good domain name.

Most portfolio website builders will give you a free domain name with the registration – don’t waste the opportunity and pick one that’s easy to spell, read, and remember. Bonus points if a domain also explains what field are you working on.

A lot of the explaining will be done through your site’s content as well – and when you build a website, make sure to invest some time on SEO. It is extremely important if you want to sell your work or services. Best portfolio website builder services will include SEO toolkits and tutorials to help you optimize media and content, so it has a better chance to rank high on search engines. And oh, it’s worth it. Even reaching the top of local search results pages for low competition keywords can send thousands of visitors to your website every year.

4.Be Easy To Reach Out

You need to make sure that your contact information is readily available. After all, the purpose of your portfolio website is to promote your work and/or gain new clients!

The way to reach you can be a contact form, or a very easy to find subpage, including email, physical address, or other relevant information.

For example, the portfolio of Anthony Friend (created with GoDaddy website builder) has a “Contact Us” subpage with address and possible ways to contact the photographer.

And if you’re selling services, you may want to consider the price list or ability to schedule a meeting. As long as everything is easy to find and use, the sky is the limit!

If you take these tips into account you should be able to put together an attractive, functional portfolio website in next to no time. As always, make sure that you do your own research to help you create a portfolio that’s right for you and your work.

Best Portfolio Website Builder – SummaryBest Portfolio Website Builder – Summary

Choosing the best portfolio website builder for your needs is crucial because it will allow you to put together an attractive, engaging site that showcases your best work. I’ve covered some of the best builders available in this article, giving you the information you need to find one that works for your situation.

So…which one should you go with?

In my opinion, Wix is always a good choice. It’s a little complicated to use at first, but the design flexibility that it offers is second to none.

GoDaddy Website Builder, WordPress.com, and Strikingly are all great beginner-friendly options, all with their specific strengths. Simple business features, blogging, and one-page sites – in that order.

Meanwhile, Zenfolio is perhaps the best photography portfolio builder that I’ve found. Not suited for much else – but if you’re a photographer, it’s definitely a shot worth taking.

Squarespace offers brilliant modern design templates, and Weebly also provides some of the best eCommerce tools of any provider on this list.

At the same time, IM Creator and Format are tailored towards artists and other creatives. Both offer great portfolio features and intuitive website builders. Finally, Jimdo uses one of the most powerful AI design assistants available to make getting online a breeze.

All things considered, there is no single best website builder for portfolios. Rather, the right builder for your situation will depend on a range of factors, including the type of portfolio you want, your tech skills, and the time you’re willing to put into building your site.

As always, make sure that you do your own research before committing to any website builder. Most of the providers listed here offer either free trials or entirely free subscriptions, allowing you to test them out risk-free. I’d recommend doing just that. And I really hope that I helped answer some of your questions and gave you plenty of inspiration to go and build a portfolio website.
