Put it this way – it’s flexible and powerful enough to be a good builder for both mom-and-pop shops and massive companies. No wonder it’s topping our best website builder list as well.
Wix starts you out with a choice of more than 500 templates. And they’re not just a handful of themes in a bunch of different colors. They’re modern, responsive, and best of all – diverse. Wix’s themes are subdivided into industry categories so you can find the template that works best for your business.
Once you choose a theme for your business, it’ll be all about making the theme yours and editing it. And this is where I found Wix to be at its strongest. It’s easily the most flexible drag-and-drop website creation software I’ve seen. You can place content elements anywhere on the page, which means you have complete freedom to redesign your theme from scratch if you so choose.
Even better are the platform’s highly varied content elements. There are options for call-to-action buttons, slideshows, image strips, products, and so much more. All of these content elements make it easy to add the functionality your business needs to your website.
I think the Wix editor is truly incredible, especially for businesses still trying to hit their branding stride.
Of course, this comes with certain risks – a lot of freedom means that there are a lot of opportunities to mess up. You need to put in a decent effort to build your site and keep a consistent style, and the design phase can be time-consuming.
Wix offers a very wide array of tools for businesses.
First, the platform is fully equipped for eCommerce, with an extensive product designer, and abandoned cart recovery baked in. Plus, Wix comes with inventory management and real-time shipping quotes to help manage your business.

Here comes the worse news – Wix isn’t the cheapest website builder. But to be fair, the pricing is very attractive given all of the tools you get in return.
Sure, there’s a free plan available – but if you’re serious about your business do yourself a favor and steer clear. It’s not great since you can’t add your own domain name and you’re limited to just 500 MB of content storage and bandwidth.
More serious plans start at $13 per month, with upgrade options for $17 or $22 per month to increase your storage and bandwidth.
If you want to accept online payments through your Wix website, online store plans start at $23 per month. All things considered, Wix is probably the best small business website builder out there.
If you’re all about the ultimate simplicity, boy do I have a website builder for you. It’s called SITE123, and it offers free non-eCommerce websites and a very affordable eCommerce plan.
With low prices and a very simple building process, it may just be the best option for businesses tight on time and money.
SITE123 takes a slightly different approach to website design than some of the other builders I explored. Instead of offering a drag-and-drop website editor, SITE123 gives you pre-made pages and page sections.
For example, there’s a pre-designed ‘Contact’ page where you can change the text to reflect your own business details and a ‘Testimonials’ page where you can add customer reviews. But, you can’t do anything to change the content elements on these pages or their layout.
Basically, you’re just putting Legos together and making a house!
The net result is that SITE123 makes it fast to build a custom website for your business, but the design process is extremely restrictive. The downside is that if you need a page or content that isn’t available through the pre-made blocks, you’re out of luck. This is problematic when, for example, you want to add more content to your ‘About’ page than the template allows.
The look and feel of SITE123 sites also just isn’t that unique. The platform offers more than 200 themes, but I wasn’t blown away by any of them. A lot of them look similar to one another, and the layout is largely the same across all SITE123 websites because of how the pre-made pages work.
The bottom line: SITE123 allows you to build a business website quickly, but the inflexibility of the platform can be very frustrating. It’s the best website builder for small business owners that want things done quickly.
SITE123 supports online stores, but it’s relatively limited in this respect. You won’t find advanced selling features like abandoned cart recovery in this budget builder, nor is there a ton of flexibility for designing products that pop on the page. SITE123 also doesn’t support cross-listing your products on other sales channels or offer any tools for dropshippers.

BigCommerce is a dedicated eCommerce platform with plenty of options for scaling your business. The platform features a highly versatile product designer, as well as an app store with hundreds of extensions.
It’s not the easy, feel-good website builder like some others in this list. Instead, it’s a serious, super powerful tool, created to build new businesses as much as help the existing ones.
And oh, it shows.
Design is not BigCommerce’s strong suit. That’s not to say that online stores built using this platform look bad — in fact, many look very good — but rather that you don’t have much flexibility at all. Instead, the look and feel of your online store are controlled almost entirely by your template.
Unfortunately, you only have four templates to choose from for free within BigCommerce. The platform does offer a few dozen premium themes, but they cost between $200 and $400 a piece. You can occasionally find a template on sale, but that’s pretty pricey.
And also, there’s are entire realms of third-party markets. You can purchase a lot more themes from other vendors, as well as hire a professional to make one for you from scratch.
If you can get past the storefront setup, BigCommerce is impressively equipped to help grow your eCommerce business. To start, the platform has one of the best product design interfaces I’ve seen. You can add not only text, images, and videos, but also information about brands, gift wrapping options, nearly unlimited variants, and custom forms.
That’s way more customization potential than most competing eCommerce builders offer.
On top of that, BigCommerce’s abandoned cart recovery tool is unmatched. Where most online store platforms allow you to send one follow-up email to customers, BigCommerce lets you send three different messages. That can have an immediate and noticeable effect on your conversion rate.
BigCommerce boasts a bunch of other powerful tools as well. There’s a built-in customer review and rating system, and you can even have those product ratings appear directly in Google search results. In addition, visitors can search your product catalog using multiple different filters, which reduces friction in the buying process.
One of the big attractions to BigCommerce is the platform’s app marketplace. Here, you’ll find hundreds of extensions that offer advanced visitor analytics, dropshipping logistics, blog monetization, and more. Overall, if you need to sell online – BigCommerce is more than capable of delivering you the goods. BigCommerce plans start at $29.95, which isn’t cheap — especially after you factor in paying for a premium template. But, you get a surprising number of features for that price, including the ability to sell gift cards, access to the customer review system, and unlimited staff accounts.
Unfortunately, getting access to BigCommerce’s abandoned cart recovery feature requires upgrading to a $79.95 per month ‘Plus’ plan. If you want faceted product searches or for your product ratings to show up in Google, a ‘Pro’ plan will cost you $249.95 per month.
It’s also important to know that BigCommerce puts revenue limits on each of these plans.
If you sell more than $50,000 worth of goods and services in a year with a ‘Standard’ plan, you’ll automatically be bumped up to Plus.
Plus users will be bumped up to Pro if they sell more than $150,000 worth of products in a year.
Keep in mind that, depending on what your business needs, you can spend heavily on app subscriptions and fees. Prices for BigCommerce extensions vary widely, but it’s very easy to run a bill of hundreds of dollars per month on apps alone.
So yeah, BigCommerce is amazing alright. But like with most great things in life, it requires having a lot of money.
You may have heard of WordPress before – but most likely, you’ve heard of WordPress.org. It’s an open-source content management system (CMS), that’s amazing for blogging and building your website from the ground up.
But it’s in no way the best website builder for small business – it requires a hosting server to install, is not simple to use, and oh, it’s not even a website builder!
Well then – let me introduce you to WordPress.com. It’s a fully-equipped platform, combining the simplicity of a website builder and features of the open-source CMS.
It features the very impressive blog post editor that WordPress.org is famous for while making it even easier to monetize your writing. In addition, WordPress.com has simple tools for setting up an online store.
WordPress.com has around 300 themes in total that you can choose from, although a significant number of these are premium offerings. Depending on your plan tier, you may have to pay for these or they may be free.
Either way, WordPress.com’s template offerings are very nice. There’s a huge diversity of options, and you can search not only by industry but also by content layout style. That’s a big plus if you already have an idea for how you want your website to look and just need a theme that can help you bring it to life.
I was also a pretty big fan of the WordPress.com drag-and-drop editor. It’s extremely intuitive to use and didn’t feel limiting, even though it lacks some of the flexibility of Wix’s editor. I would have liked to see more diverse content elements from this platform, such as text and image combinations. But, it’s easy enough to make your own combinations simply by arranging elements on the page.
The highlight of WordPress.com for businesses is the blog editor. Whether your business revolves around blogging or you simply want to use a blog to increase your brand’s visibility, WordPress.com blogs can get the job done.
The first thing that I liked about the blog post editor is that it’s virtually identical to the page editor. That means you have access to all the same content elements and the freedom to rearrange them. Plus, the post editor is modern and comfortable — it feels like writing in Microsoft Word, which was nice after experiencing some HTML-style blog editors in other builders.
The post you’re reading right now is written on the very same editor! So trust me when I say that it rules.
Plugins are another great thing for blogging with WordPress.com. For example, the Yoast SEO tool highlights keyword density and sentence complexity to make suggestions about how to improve your post’s visibility. It’s a very useful tool for online writing, especially if you’re new to SEO-friendly blogging.
Best of all, WordPress.com makes it easy to monetize your blog. There are instructions for how to connect Google AdSense, or you can accept simple payments through buttons embedded in your posts.
If you want to build an eCommerce store around your blog, WordPress.com has plenty of support for that, too. You get access to dozens of payment providers and real-time shipping quotes to make running your business as simple as possible. You can even sell services and digital downloads using plugins from WordPress.com’s extensive app marketplace.
WordPress.com has a free plan, which somewhat masks how expensive this platform can get. The free plan doesn’t allow you to connect your own domain, so it’s best suited for simply trying out the platform.
Paid plans start at just $4 per month, but you don’t get much for that price. There’s no social media integration, customization is limited, and you’ll have to pay for premium themes. If you upgrade to an $8 per month ‘Premium’ plan, you get unlimited premium templates, blog monetization, and Google Analytics integration.
Adding SEO tools to your website requires a $25 per month ‘Business’ plan. And if you want to build an eCommerce store with WordPress.com, you’ll need a pricey $45 per month eCommerce plan.

Well, GoDaddy Website Builder promises to be the best website builder for small businesses who want the best of both worlds – amazing simplicity, coming in at a very low learning curve.
GoDaddy Website Builder includes several built-in tools for booking appointments through your website, which makes this builder ideal for any service-based businesses. On top of that, GoCentral has a built-in email marketing tool and offers support for eCommerce stores. The site designer is somewhat limited, but the platform’s templates can help you jumpstart your business website.
On the design front, GoDaddy Website Builder’s primary attraction is simplicity. The platform has dozens of templates. The selection is very impressive, with a diverse range of designs that offer full-width homepage images and use negative space to strong effect. If you’re looking to open an eCommerce storefront, it also has templates specifically for that.
Unfortunately, that’s about where GoCentral’s design attributes end. You can’t add content elements to any template, so you’re stuck with the built-in pages and layout. The editor allows you to mildly customize your website with fonts and color palettes, but this hardly makes up for the inability to add text, images, or products where you want them.
Another thing to watch out for with GoDaddy Website Builder is that the builder doesn’t allow you to have secondary pages. That means that all of the pages that are part of your website appear in the top-level navigation. So, GoCentral is really only good if your website has around six pages or less.
The tools GoDaddy Website Builder offers for businesses go a long way towards making up for the platform’s design shortcomings. To start, every plan comes with a business email address and phone number free for one year — a nice touch to help get your company off the ground.
On top of that, GoDaddy Website Builder can help your business bring in customers. There’s a built-in email marketing tool, which you can use to send out automated mailings or the occasional newsletter. There are limits on how many emails you can send, but it is still much cheaper than a dedicated email campaign using something like MailChimp.
My favorite feature in this builder overall was appointment bookings. Visitors to your website can book one-time appoints, or you can set up recurring events such as group classes. You can get a text message alert when someone books so you know immediately to add it to your schedule. Even better, you can use this builder to automatically remind your customers of their upcoming appointment via text or email.
GoDaddy Website Builder also has a decent suite of tools for online stores. In addition to standard features like discounts and shipping quotes, the platform makes it easy to cross-list products with Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Walmart. Even better, the builder will automatically track your inventory based on sales across all your linked sales channels.
And if you are uncertain as to what are you even supposed to do (it’s okay, we’ve all been there!), GoDaddy will help you get started with the Action Plan, that’s an individual checklist to help your business get started easier.

The price increase isn’t steep – and even the most expensive GoDaddy plan is cheaper than the entry BigCommerce plan, so this is a much better budget option for small businesses.
Weebly used to be a simple, yet a feature-packed website builder. But after being acquired by a payment gateway Square, it quickly morphed into an affordable all-in-one business platform, perfect for many small companies.
But it still hasn’t forgotten its humble website builder beginnings – the business platform still offers a flexible drag-and-drop editor.
Design is a strong suit for Weebly whether you need a non-eCommerce website or an attractive storefront. The platform offers around 50 different templates that cover a wide span of styles. And while that may sound pretty low, compared to some competitors, I was pretty impressed with the selection. And even happier to find that you can refresh the look of your site at any time simply by changing themes.
And there are also options for you to purchase third-party Weebly themes and upload them on your website. So technically, there’s no limit to your options!
Weebly’s drag-and-drop editor also strikes a nice balance between freedom and simplicity. The platform does have some ground rules — for example, you can’t create layouts beyond a three or four-column grid. But, you do have complete freedom within that grid to place, rearrange, and resize content elements. Plus, a comprehensive style editor allows you to customize the look of your template.
The one negative thing I would say about Weebly in terms of design is that your choice of content elements is a little limited. There aren’t options for image slideshows or really impressive galleries on this platform. All the basics are covered, but I would have liked to see some more exciting content tools to help you attract and keep visitors on your site.

The app store isn’t huge, so you’ll probably be limited to one option for each feature you want to add. But, having this pay-as-you-go option is a major plus for businesses that need unique logistics tools or advanced business analytics.
Weebly’s built-in marketing tools make it a very good choice for business owners who aren’t looking for an eCommerce option, too. Even free users get access to SEO tools and lead capture forms.
Plus, the analytics platform built into Weebly is a great starting point for getting to know who’s interested in your business and how you can better reach them.
Another plus is that Weebly comes with an email marketing tool that allows you to build eye-catching mailings. The editor works just like the page editor, so it’s easy to capture your brand aesthetic when you’re reaching out to customers to drum up new business.

If your small business is running on visuals – Squarespace will be the perfect option for you. With incredible, modern templates, it has a lot of templates just made to showcase your product in complete full-screen glory.
The platform’s design features can be a bit confusing at first, but Squarespace has a lot to offer once you dig in. On top of that, the platform offers a nice array of business features like a built-in email marketing tool and stunning blogs.
There are more than 100 themes available to choose – they are incredibly diverse and feature much more intricate designs than what most other builders offer. On top of that, there are templates for many different industries, each with tailored pages to help launch your business site.
Even better, I found Squarespace themes to be immensely customizable. The style editor offers hundreds of options to change everything from the padding around your images to the color of call-to-action buttons.
The range of style settings is very impressive and gives you a ton of control over the look and feel of your site.
The real draw to Squarespace is the platform’s image galleries. You don’t just get simple grid-style image displays. Instead, there are options for text and image combinations like posters and slide cards, as well as beautiful slideshows when visitors click on your images.
These gallery options can be a huge advantage for artists, photographers, and other creative businesses, but they work just as well for showing off products or staff members.
Still, business owners will need to be prepared to spend some time playing around in Squarespace to understand how the editor works.
Although it’s a drag-and-drop designer, the interface is anything but intuitive. It took me a few hours to settle into the Squarespace editor, and after that, I came to really like using it.
Squarespace is a closed ecosystem with no app store, which makes it somewhat different than the other business website builders I showed you here earlier. The consequence of this approach is that if Squarespace doesn’t have a tool you need to run your business, there’s no easy way to add it.
That said, the platform comes with a lot of functionality built-in. eCommerce store owners will find support for gift cards, abandoned cart recovery, customer accounts, and product reviews. On top of that, Squarespace is able to integrate with ShipStation to offer real-time shipping quotes and logistics help.
I also really liked Squarespace’s built-in email marketing tool. You can build newsletters and custom mailings using the same editor as for designing your website, which means you have access to all the same image and gallery content elements.
Which also means not having to learn the complicated editor twice.
Squarespace also does a surprisingly good job with blogs. Blog posts are essentially miniature pages, so again you have access to all of the unique text and image content elements. While it’s a bit harder to monetize a blog than with WordPress.com, it’s possible to serve ads with Squarespace or add payment buttons.
Beauty comes at a price. Squarespace’s plans start at $12 per month, although this includes unlimited bandwidth and storage as well as advanced visitor analytics.
If you want to accept payments, a ‘Business’ plan costs $18 per month. Note that this plan carries a 3% commission on sales – so depending on how much you sell, your Squarespace fees may go up a fair bit.
Don’t want to give a chunk of your hard-earned money to a website builder? There’s a way out.
Squarespace splits its commission-free eCommerce offerings into two price tiers. A ‘Basic Commerce’ plan costs $26 per month and includes almost all selling tools. However, Squarespace requires you to upgrade to an ‘Advanced Commerce’ plan for $45 per month if you want to sell gift cards or subscriptions or if you need abandoned cart recovery.
Overall, Squarespace can get a fair bit expensive – but considering the features you’re given, this might just be a decent investment.
Shopify is an eCommerce behemoth, loved by many businesses focused on online selling. With plenty of features for dropshipping, and a massive app store offering dozens of extensions, it’s probably the best business website builder on this list.
And everything is really, really terrific – except the fact that with several apps installed, your Shopify experience may get extremely pricey.
Shopify is built for eCommerce, so the design isn’t the platform’s strongest suit. But, I was pleasantly surprised by the adaptations that Shopify has made to allow you to customize your online store.
In particular, Shopify gives you the ability to add page sections to your site. These sections can be anything from a single image to a newsletter signup form to a customer testimonial. Flexibility is still lacking to be sure, as every page section is automatically full-width and there are no customization options for the built-in elements. But, having the ability to add and rearrange content is a big plus over competitors like BigCommerce.
So, what about the themes? Well, the platform offers only eight templates for free. And premium themes — which are noticeably more feature-rich — cost between $140 and $180 apiece. Luckily, third-party themes are available, so you can choose from a virtually limitless online market to find your favorite option.
The features that come with Shopify are relatively basic and, to be honest, a little limited. There’s abandoned cart recovery, but you can only send one email to customers to try to make a conversion. In addition, basic selling tools like gift cards and customer accounts will require an expensive $79-a-month Shopify plan.
The key to Shopify is the app store. The platform is really designed as a vessel to be filled with extensions, so it’s not totally surprising that you don’t get a lot of tools included with your plan.
In contrast to other app marketplaces I looked at, which have a couple hundred extensions or fewer, Shopify’s app store has more than 3,000 add-ons.
And they have a solid selection of categories filled with apps of all kinds.
The selection is truly immense. For every business function you could think of, there are multiple apps that can get the job done. This is particularly useful for dropshippers since there are numerous different extensions available — each linking you to different manufacturers so you can diversify your product selection.
Even better, there are plenty of Shopify apps for logistics. You can easily streamline your shipping and inventory tracking, which allows you to take a completely hands-off approach to your business. Of course, there are plenty of extensions for marketing and merchandising as well so you can dramatically scale your shop’s revenue.
On top of all that, Shopify boasts one of the largest selections of payment providers of any eCommerce platform. You get to either choose the low-cost Shopify Payments or choose from more than 100 other payment gateways to accept purchases from anywhere in the world
The major downside to Shopify is that it can be prohibitively expensive for small businesses. The plans themselves aren’t too extravagant — a ‘Basic Shopify’ plan costs $29 per month and a fully-featured ‘Shopify’ plan costs $79 per month.
But, it’s very easy to rack up hundreds of dollars in subscription fees each month from apps. Between extensions for SEO, visitor analytics, and security alone, you can more than double the monthly cost of a Shopify store. That’s before you even get into apps for dropshipping or marketing.
Before going head first into Shopify, I recommend listing down the required features and seeing whether Shopify will end up hurting your business financially. For some small businesses, looking for a couple of niche things, Shopify may end up being just a little bit too extreme.
