In this post, I’m going to compare SITE123 vs Wix, see their templates, ease of use, pricing, and performance – and help you see which website builder should you choose for your next project.
Here’s the thing when it comes to comparing SITE123 vs Wix.
They’re both pretty amazing website builders, that many people are going to absolutely love.
But they’re also massively different, therefore, perfect for different kinds of users. And this is what this comparison is going to be for – finding out which of these two builders is right for you.
Wix offers some of the best design flexibility and customization potential available. With a powerful drag-and-drop builder and pixel-level personalization, it’s great for building more complicated websites. If you have an idea in your head on how exactly your website should look – Wix is the way to go.
On the other hand, SITE123 boasts a much simpler website builder that’s tailored to beginners. By combining pre-made beautiful pages and blocks together, pretty much anyone could have a beautiful website.
A lot of that is also reflected by how the two website builder present themselves. Wix claims to give you “The freedom to create the websites you want”, while SITE123 sells itself as “By far the easiest free website builder”.
Even I couldn’t have summed it up much better.
So it’s no surprise to see Wix win when it comes to templates and design flexibility. It offers an extremely customizable drag-and-drop website builder with a large range of templates. On the other hand, SITE123 has quite a limited builder and fewer templates, which limits the creative freedom – but enhances the safety net, reduces the chance of messing up, and actually makes it more suited to beginners.
Wix and SITE123 offer quite similar eCommerce and other business features. Both give you the ability to integrate online stores into your website, create email marketing campaigns, and optimize your site for search engines. Wix wins here, but only because its low-end eCommerce plan is cheaper than SITE123’s.
Prices of both Wix and SITE123 are pretty alike – no matter whether you want eCommerce or not, the plans you’d have to choose cost nearly exactly the same on both builders.
Ultimately, I’d be lying if I said that either Wix or SITE123 was “better” than the other. They are different from one another and suited to different people. If you want to harness the design flexibility of one of the world’s most powerful website builders, use Wix. However, if you just want to build a simple website without spending too much time, then SITE123 definitely comes out ahead.
In order to give you the best possible answer – I dug deeper. Here’s what I discovered when comparing SITE123 vs Wix.
On the pricing front, Wix and SITE123 are actually quite similar. Wix’s cheapest plan is just $10/month, compared to $10.80/month for SITE123’s lowest subscription.
The cheapest eCommerce-capable Wix plan costs $23/month if you want to unlock full eCommerce functionality, compared to $22.80/month for SITE123.
SITE123 offers four paid subscriptions alongside their Free Forever plan. The Basic plan ($10.80/month) gives you a free custom domain and decent server resources, but not much else. The Advanced plan ($16.80/month) gives you email marketing tools, while the Professional plan ($22.80/month) unlocks simple eCommerce features. Finally, the Gold plan ($28.80/month) gives you access to great server resources and SITE123’s complete suite of eCommerce features.
On the other hand, Wix offers seven plans in addition to their Free Forever one. The Combo ($13/month) and Unlimited ($17/month) are comparable to SITE123’s Basic subscription. The Pro ($22/month) and VIP ($39/month) plans offer more marketing features and additional support options.
If you want access to Wix’s eCommerce features, you will need to use at least the Business Basic subscription. At $23/month it’s more than $10 cheaper than SITE123’s cheapest eCommerce plan. On the other hand, Wix’s Business VIP plan ($49/month) is slightly more expensive than SITE123’s Gold plan but offers a better range of eCommerce features.
One thing to note about the pricing of the premium plans – while doing the research on both of these builders, I’ve noticed that their prices tend to slightly fluctuate – so you might get a better deal when you visit both the Wix and SITE123 websites.
Don’t want to spend any money?
Both builders have free forever plans – and they’re also fairly similar. The plans are functional and allow you to build and publish a site, but neither lets you connect a custom domain or easily monetize your content.
Both builders are pretty simple to use. But Wix editor is a bit more powerful – which leads not only to better design capabilities, but also a steeper learning curve. Meanwhile, SITE123 is as straightforward as it gets and is perfect for beginners.
Let’s see what setting up a website was like on both of the platforms:
Signing up for and starting a new website is simple with both Wix and SITE123.
SITE123 guides you through a quick three-step process, asking you about what sort of website you want to create and what you want it to do.
You won’t be asked to provide any payment details, and the only details you have to give are a name and email address. It took me about 30 seconds to get to the point where I could start editing my website.
That’s it, that’s the process.
On the other hand, Wix has a slightly longer and more complicated registration process. It will ask you to sign up, then will guide you through a short questionnaire to help you get started.
And there you’ll be given the biggest question of all – how exactly would you like to build your website?
If you want to start with a template and a classic editor, you can – on the other hand, you can use Wix ADI (artificial design intelligence).
Let’s talk about both of those options.
The classic editor is fairly straightforward. You just choose one of the hundreds of themes available and get to editing.
The editor is fairly complicated, and might even look intimidating to some beginners. I promise – it’s not that awful, but it still might take a few hours and a couple of broken websites to get everything going.
And so, here’s Wix ADI – it’s essentially the company’s answer to the critics (myself included!) that keep mentioning Wix’s difficult editing process. It’s essentially a website generator, that will ask you a series of extra questions to help you get the exact starting design you want.
Using the Wix ADI does take a bit of time, but you might just enjoy the end product so much, it could be the easiest website builder experience you ever had.
However, there are some problems, too. After making a website with ADI, you won’t be able to add content blocks or do many other things allowed on the classic editor.
Wix offers a choice between the two extremes – an extensive, but rather complicated editing experience with the classic editor, or a very straightforward but limited editing with ADI.
All things considered, SITE123 still seems to be best if you just want to sign up and start editing your custom website immediately. While Wix is more suited if you want a more personalized building and editing experience.
Wix and SITE123 have one key difference between them – and it’s the way their website builders operate. Wix offers extreme design flexibility with its fully customizable drag-and-drop builder. SITE123 also uses a drag-and-drop builder, but it’s a lot simpler and won’t give you anywhere near the same customization ability.
Let’s look at Wix first. Its editor basically lets you change anything you want on your website. You can resize and reposition absolutely everything, and you can change every aspect of your design imaginable.
However, the sheer number of features available through the Wix editor can make it confusing.
But if you really want to seriously edit your Wix website, you can access your code files through the Dev Mode tab at the top of the editor.
And more advanced users will love to find Wix Corvid – a product that allows you to build web applications and further improve your Wix website.
Wix is a Swiss army knife of website development. It has a solution for pretty much everything, and everyone.
On the other hand, SITE123 is designed to be as easy to use as possible. It’s not as flexible or versatile as Wix, sure – but if you’re all about quickly making a website, and not about using advanced coding and design tools, it could be perfect.
The SIITE123 editor is effectively built into the management dashboard. It’s super intuitive, and even someone with absolutely no website building experience will be able to use it.
Want to add a new page to your website? You can just put it together using plenty of blocks, serving various purposes. I’ve counted over 130 of them on SITE123 – a pretty solid library to choose from.
Both Wix and SITE123 offer attractive design templates for a variety of different websites. But as expected, Wix is a clear winner on this front, offering both quantity and quality.
Wix template library has over 500 options to choose from – and there are options for nearly everything and everyone.
Every single Wix template is customizable with the Wix editor while being fully responsive and mobile optimized.
The designs of the templates are pretty great, too – they’re both modern and diverse, so if you have a good-looking website in mind, chances are, Wix has already got a template like that.
That being said, SITE123 is doing pretty well for itself too. The template library is pretty solid as well, with around 200 templates available. The themes are fully responsive and mobile-optimized as well
However, I’d argue that SITE123’s templates are just a bit inferior to Wix’s.
Essentially, the templates are just preexisting blocks combined together, using a custom color palette. And their customizability is limited by the basic editor and the block system.
So it’s no surprise that they can’t exactly compare to Wix’s custom designs. That being said – SITE123 templates will be just fine for people looking for a good starting point for their website.
Both SITE123 and Wix have a lot of business features available for their users – but in many cases, you’ll have to pay to access them.
Here’s how SITE123 vs Wix compare in their business features.
Both SITE123 and Wix offer decent eCommerce features, and cost pretty much the same to start – around $23 a month. But there’s still a winner – with a dedicated online store portal and a lot of eCommerce tools, Wix seems to come out ahead, especially if you’re planning on building a large store.
Just a few of the eCommerce features that make Wix stand out include:
However, I found SITE123 to be pretty solid, too. It has some decent eCommerce features, especially for smaller stores. It’s not as powerful as Wix on this front, but once again its simplicity stands out. It’s super easy to build and manage a small online store with SITE123, and it’s probably the best choice for small businesses.
Both Wix and SITE123 offer great online store features. Wix is better for larger stores that need more features, while SITE123 makes things easy for small providers.
Wix and SITE123 both have a solid array of features to reach your customers. Both have some sort of email marketing – and a lot more, so your business can bring the clients in, and make them stay.
SITE123 includes email marketing with the Advanced ($16.80/month) plan. All of the plans also have in-built features for restaurant reservations and menus, scheduled bookings, as well as events.
What are the tools like? Well – they’re basic, but they do the job.
If you’re looking for something a bit more advanced – Wix is the way to go.
Namely, because it includes email marketing (and much more) with the product called Ascend – it’s an all-in-one business tool, combining email marketing, customer journey tracking, business promotion and several other things.
A free Ascend plan is included with every Wix purchase, however, most users will have to consider buying a premium plan – they cost from $9 to $45 a month.
Comparing SITE123 vs Wix in terms of performance, I found that both of these website builders are pretty fast. However, during the tests, I also discovered problems Wix users may endure.
But first – SITE123. In order to see how well optimized the website is, I ran it through the GTMetrix test – and the results were pretty good. A PageSpeed score of 82% is well above average, while a YSlow score of 93% is excellent.
My Wix website had very similar PageSpeed (89%) and YSlow (89%) scores, but it loaded a fair bit slower than my SITE123 one. Although the scores appear good, a seven-second load time isn’t great under any circumstances. That being said, I did not notice a massive difference in the naked eye test, with both builder websites loading sufficiently quickly.
Similarly, the LoadImpact performance test showed decent results for both Wix and SITE123. This test works by placing the website’s servers under increasing load (the green and purple lines in the image below) and measuring the site’s response time (blue line). Therefore, you can see how your website is expected to behave with several visitors on it.
My SITE123 website performed very well with consistent response times, suggesting that high-quality servers and server optimization tools were used.
My Wix website had very low response times as well – except for one small spike. But even this spike only reached 50ms, which is still very fast, and points to both the servers being very fast, and various optimization tools being employed.
In this SITE123 vs Wix comparison, we’ve looked at the major features of each website builder to see which is better. Wix provides more advanced design features and cheaper eCommerce plans, while SITE123 is much simpler and more suited to beginners and people who want to build basic websites quickly.
Both Wix and SITE123 are great choices for people with no web development or coding skills – because both builders offer quick, intuitive solutions to get a website up and going in no time.
But all things considered, I suggest using both builders to their strengths. Therefore, I recommend using Wix if you want access to one of the world’s most powerful drag-and-drop website builders, complete with a huge range of attractive design templates and some great native features. However, it can be confusing for beginners because of the large number of design and editing options available.
On the other hand, I was thoroughly impressed with how much SITE123 is focused on beginner users, who want to build a simple website with the least amount of effort possible. It still offers more than enough design features for you to personalize your site, and I personally love using it.
As always, make sure you do your own research to help you decide which website builder is right for you. You could also have a look at some of the alternatives to SITE123 and Wix that I’ve listed below – you might find one that’s better suited to your needs.
Although both SITE123 and Wix are great choices for people who want to build a new website, there are some other alternatives that you should consider.
GoDaddy Website Builder is a great alternative to both SITE123 and Wix. It’s focused on small businesses – so it has a lot of great features, helping you to sell online, and connect to your visitors. A simple website building process makes everything incredibly simple – and there’s a free trial available for everyone interested in trying it out.
If you want to focus on eCommerce, then Shopify is a great option. It’s an incredibly powerful solution, used by many major businesses. With a powerful app store, and a lot of first and third-party templates, it’s suited for any kind of business – and while it may be one of the more expensive options out there, it’s well worth the money.
One-page websites are a simple way for existing businesses to increase their online presence. And Strikingly is one of the major names to consider if you want to make yourself this kind of a website.
One of the cheapest premium website builder options out there, Gator website builder offers website analytics and online sales for those on a budget. It’s not going to be perfect for bigger businesses – but small operations will appreciate the value this website builder brings.
